Re: why go o strike?
I'd prefer a "work to rule" first before a strike.
With the union making bloody sure that members do work to rule!
No turning up early! Having your breaks. No overtime (sadly). Cutting off on time! etc

Absolutely agree, this really would expose the way RM operates. And, may serve as a message to any potential buyer that part time contracts are just that, there is no obligation to do any additional hours if the employee does not want to.......Postal Postie II wrote:I'd prefer a "work to rule" first before a strike.

The only thing a work to rule will expose is just how little attention the members will pay to it.

Nice Idea - But how would the Union be able to make sure. Thats where a WTR falls down, on the practical side. Its difficult if not impossible to enforce, it isolates members and leaves vulnerable members open to pressure from management, but ultimately RM will at some point suspend someone and then the whole office/country goes out on a wildcat. So instead of a few days here and there everyone ends up on a full on indefinite strike.
For a Work to Rule to work you need a very strong office that shows solidarity when under pressure. Sadly there are not many offices out there that fit that description.

And if you've got one of them they will be doing the job properly anyway.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Re: why go o strike?
do you really think so? that's pretty depressing. I just think a WTR could be a longer lasting method as opposed to the odd day here and there of striking. And with striking the RM heirachy have always got the get-out of why the service is not being fully provided, whereas if the job is being done properly or by WTR and the service is not being fully provided then it highlights their shortcomings and the way it operates (with it being reliant on overtime to perform the regular service, while at the same time only offering part time contracts).fishtank wrote:mickeymacca wrote:Absolutely agree, this really would expose the way RM operates.

However if you think it is a non-starter, I bow to your superior knowledge ( begrudgingly! )

Re: why go o strike?
Realistically, everybody should already be working to rule.
What are the chances that the early starters and runners will start now? None in my view.
Plus, it's the easiest thing for RM to work around, there would be close to zero effect on the service.

Re: why go o strike?
If there was a shortfall RM could bring in agency staff to cover it because you wouldn't be taking industrial action you'd just be working normally and the next thing you know there would really be a two tier workforce - somebody leaves get an agency worker, overtime needed get an agency worker...........you have to be aware that RM will protect the service despite the workforce and at any cost. Some years ago our office had a spell of using agency workers for a few weeks and the experience wasn't repeated.

R/M would not do that now they just intimidate the staff they have or give them false promises of overtime after all we need CAPITAL!.dvbuk55 wrote:If there was a shortfall RM could bring in agency staff to cover it because you wouldn't be taking industrial action you'd just be working normally and the next thing you know there would really be a two tier workforce - somebody leaves get an agency worker, overtime needed get an agency worker...........you have to be aware that RM will protect the service despite the workforce and at any cost. I was mainly referring to overtime gremlin, but take your comment on board. Seems like WTR is OK in principle but not in practice.....UnhappyGremlin wrote:Realistically, everybody should already be working to rule.

Mickey, Fish is right on the button when he says that WTR will fail, ive seen it broken very quickly by managers who will start offering very tempting easy overtime to fliers who will not be able to resist. We are talking 10 hours docket for half a walk etc.mickeymacca wrote:However if you think it is a non-starter,
I would love to see WTR work and avoid losing any pay but in fact all it actually does is cause resentment within the office at a time when you need 100% solidarity.
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........
