PF Already have the owner driver thing, not sure how it works, whether they get a shite basic and then any on top of x amount of parcels they get extra or something like that.
'Could' PF go for the Yodel type model,50p-1£ per 'call' by peeps in a Fiesta.

Serious savings there and that is why we lose so many contracts to the couriers.
What Fish is saying makes sense but,it does make you think.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Fish the real problem for Royal Mail is whilst they can bang on about the decline in letter volumes increasing , the growth in packets in particular larger packets is growing. This is a real barrier to them takin the hours they want from deliveries.

Now Postman has hit the nail on its head parcel force traffic is growing , intentional packets are growing Royal Mail know the larger packet and parcel area is not regulated and they have introduced owner drivers which us cut costs.

Many people thought we would not lost data post we did , many thought we would not lose parcels we did , many thought door to door would remain the same it didn't.

See fish it's very easy for you to say Higson and Royal Mail are bluffing , but when you see the reports and the research they have done in other countries then you will see it as a threat. Now clearly the union is opposed to this but the right tactic is not to call their bluff or ignore it but to argue against it.

Remember Royal Mail clearly believe the future and growth of the industry is in two areas packets and advertising mail both addressed and unaddressed.

I know that Royal Mail's plans are more than just a bluff ! Fish do you really know they are not a bluff ? You ask whether letters and door to door will sustain the USO. We are not talking just that are we the talking that a lot of packets do fit in the letterbox now plus door to door is not part of the USO.

The threat of removing check off has been there but would be the nuclear option for Royal Mail and in any case the CWU pay Royal Mail a large sum of money for check off. Any union would take the removal of check off as a threat the RMT lost close on 30 000 members when check off was removed about 8 years ago but have since become the faster growing union and now have a membership of around 70 million.

If the threat is real you have no choice but to call their bluff.
If the intention is to genuinely remove all items that don't fit through a letter box and move them over to PF no amount of arguing will make any difference because this is not a minor change that could be negotiated over.
The point about the USO is that it could not be sustained financially with a business that only delivered items that could fit through a letter box,a seriously declining market reliant on leaflets and flyers to prop it up..
Royal Mail know that and so do Ofcom,if the threat was real it would be a threat to ultimately close the business down because no Government will subsidise the USO.

If the threat is real the modernisation plan that cost us so much in jobs and conditions was a sham from the start, the Postal Services Act which placed so much emphasis on the modernisation plan and creating a strong USO provider was built on lies, the application for State Aid which promised as one of it's conditions to deliver that modernisation plan was fraudulent and the last 3 years of "engagement" endorsed by the CWU where staff have worked hard to overcome every difficulty thrown at them despite little or no support have been wasted effort.
Call his bluff?
I would tell him to do what he has to do and we'll meet him at the gate. :cuppa
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
