a deal that goes back to the efficiency agreement and makes us cut more 1000's of jobs isn't a good deal. Neither is one that leaves weaker sections like MDEC or postal counters to one side to fight on their own - all out until all claims are settled!

Full agree with everything you said. Problem is that so many posties are parochial in their views and will only strike when they see a benefit for themselves, once they have got what they wanted they would go back in. However, be assured I would be out there with you on this, and at a guess most on here as by definition they cant be parochial if they are on here.

I think most posties could be won to the view on jobs certainly. The problem is the leadership strategy is to trade jobs for pay ("raising pay and a postal workers' status to Â£400 a week"), in other words trade our long term strength away for a two tier workforce and bonuses based on cuts.

But look at how Dave Ward and the PEC have shifted the goal posts from last year and dropped pay. Last year we got a sub-inflation pay rise. Now Dave Ward has stated that Â£400 is a long term goal for the next five years (at today's rate of inflation that will be worth Â£320 in today's money!). We'll see about the rumour of Â£350/week in the deal coming up, i'll eat my postal shorts if that is on the table, without Â£350 million in cuts as the conditions!

Now we're not even fighting for a decent pay rise, its just about splitting the difference with Royal Mail on our how big the cuts will be for our jobs and conditions, with new starters losing on every count by the looks of it so far.

Isn't that what Royal Mail's strategy has always been? See if they can get away with their business strategy, and if that doens't work, its demands are so extreme that smaller cuts will seem ok.

We need a rank and file movement in the post to organise those who are up for a fight and have a louder voice that can inspire thousands beyond them. We can't leave it to the leaders.

I would imagine the same strategist who negotiated the cuts to ALL overtime rates -just get down on your knees and hope that he isn't on THIS negotiating team.

its great to be able to vote on it, but there is usually some propaganda BS from both royal mail and the union which will convince the less knowledgable that a bad deal is actually good and in their best interests. Sweetners like 3 figured bonuses usually pursuade people we are on a good deal when its actually false economy.

Tony's right the leadership will get behind it and say its the best deal possible and try to get everyone to vote for it (or not vote out of disgust or apathy).

If its a s**t deal we need to get our branches to campaign among the members for a no vote - that's what's happening in Unison, the leadership has put the government's s**t pay offer to the members and many of the health worker and local government branches are campaigning for a no vote. We can do the same.

If we accept a s**t deal, Royal Mail will just come back next year with more cuts. Then theres a danger that everyone will say "whats the point in striking, whenever we do it doesnt change anyting".

There is no deal as yet so how can we vote on something we do not have?
When its all sorted then we will have our say and it will be a democratic vote which we will all have to abide by ( just like we did when way forward came in).
The membership will not make the same mistake again like they did with way forward that was the worst decsion in CWU history and i am sure we have all learned by that.
