It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Of course we don't stand around on street corners. What would be the point in that?muzzy wrote:Just because you're given a paid break, doesn't mean you HAVE to take it. I'd rather be busy than standing around in the rain watching my clock. I'll bet the majority of posties don't take half hour breaks on street corners, I've yet to see one stood about doing nothing.
Either you take your break before you go out, or you split your break or (worst case scenario) you take it at the end of your shift.
But you claim it and get paid for it. If people don't take their break or claim for their break we will end up not having a paid break.
And people will moan it's the union's fault. It won't be. It will be down to people voluntarily surrendering one of the terms and conditions we have which is over and above what we are legally entitled to.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Coming from a retail background, working overtime for nout was and is common practice. I was self employed for 7 years and as all self employed know, working for free is also normal.
So what seems strange to you doesn't to me. Doesn't make it right i know, but something I and millions of others are not alien to

Good luck with that muzzy.muzzy wrote:

It's guys like you that put this country where it is.
Keep it up and we'll be back to lining the gates begging for a day's work from the boss.
The conditions in retail are s**t because the staff allowed that to happen.
They stabbed each other in the back and undercut each other right down to the minimum wage and unpaid breaks.
Maybe that doesn't seem strange and alien to you but it sounds weak and pathetic to me.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Just about sums it up.No matter how bad the union are at the moment, and let's be honest, its about as weak as ive known it in nearly 20 years, its people like muzzy that are undermining our T&C more than the CWU ever have! The most worrying thing is,they can't,or don't want to see it....
same as it ever was...

I know where your office is Muzzy, don't believe the hype!
That particular management team have been pulling that company line for years....
They are using the very thing you are saying against you, namely that there are plenty of people out there with no jobs.
It's scare tactics used to make you feel honoured to work for the royal mail!
You have rights and one of them is not to work for free.
Work to your time, they cannot and will not cancel your contract if you only work what hours you are employed for.
Yes work overtime but only if you are paid. But do say you are doing this before you leave the office.

This forum seems to be mainly used by posties having a moan about anything and everything, if it's that bad perhaps try quitting and joining the millions of others out of work and likely to be for the forseeable future.
Me, I'm happy to be back in work and if my unpaid OT bothers you so much might I suggest that you have such wonderful lives you have to worry about what others are doing with theirs.

I too was self employed for a long time and have recently come to this job from the retail sector and I can't understand why anybody would want to bring some of the worst aspects of that sector (unpaid forced overtime and unpaid breaks - if you're lucky enough to even get them) to this job. I make sure I take my full entitlement of breaks, even if it means standing and listening to yet another dull tirade about fishing or football! The day may come in the future when you'd be grateful of having such an entitlement but, like these guys have said, use it or lose it!

We've all seen your sort Muzzy trying to erode our hard earned terms & conditions. You get a paid break so take it. Grow a pair then it will make your job easier
BTW it is also the LAW to have a break whether you want to work through it or not, by LAW you take it

Muzzy, my man, a lot of people in this industry have made a lot of sacrifices over many years, just so you can enjoy things like a paid break.
Be thankful to these people who stood together, to ensure that future colleagues enjoyed these benefits, and don't throw them away on a whim.
You and i both know that when they're gone .......... they're gone.

Looks like your Area rep is on the verge of signing an agreement with the DSM that every one should take 20 mins before they go out and it will be the Managers responsibility to enforce this. Then 20 mins at the end of the duty, legally if you work for a six hour period a 20 min break should be taken during this period not before or after, ask you coach to show you the Canteen,.
