If I am available for work and through their instructions I am not allowed to work, that is their problem at their cost. Any advices please.

I would agree with you. Contact your CWU rep. There are so many of these instances all across the country right now. It's about time these muppet managers were all given a clear directive on what they can and can't do in these situations.

Un-be-f&cking-lievable! No sign of us being sent home, the snow has been here all week and has thawed and frozen a couple of times. Top brass go out into the yard that has been cleared of snow and declare it safe to work in.

Hi Erith

I have just read the company Severe Weather Regulations and it does say in there that they can either get you to take this as a Holiday or Work your contracted hours another day, so it seems to me we are in a no win situation. I dont know how this would stand legally as far as employment laws are concerned, perhaps someone who has some knowledge in this area could advise us.

That policy has not been agreed with the union and would be unlikely to stand up in court.
The CWU made the following statement regarding this:

Dear Colleague,

RE: Severe Weather Conditions – Pay & Modernisation Agreement

Since the publication of LtB 95/2009, the Postal Department has received a number of enquiries.

It appears that in some areas management are attempting to introduce unagreed adjustments to hours or forcing individuals to take unpaid or annual leave when they were unable to attend work due to the weather conditions. Some managers are claiming to justify this approach by quoting from a document entitled “Severe Weather Operating Manual for use in Royal Mail”. This is an unagreed management document. Furthermore there is no provision within the Pay and Modernisation Agreement for clawback of hours as a result of what is tantamount to an ‘act of God’.

Each individual case should be looked at according to its merits and the local weather conditions. Any problems should be taken through the Industrial Relations Framework. During this time the status quo should remain.

Any enquiries regarding this LtB please contact the DGS (P) Department quoting reference number 60000.

Yours sincerely

Dave Ward
Deputy General Secretary (P)

I would therefore put your case in the hands of your union rep.

In our area the police issued a warning that you should not venture out unless absolutely necessary. Therefore NO deliveries took place.
If your area is getting a similiar message then you should tell your Dom as they have a liability for your health and if they go against a police warning
could find themselves in deep mire if any accidents happen to any staff.
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.

Unfortunately it seems that here again we have a situation where Royal Mail have specific guidelines for their managers but then they are left for the manager to interpret his own rules even after using conference call facilities. We have a union leadership that has plenty to say on Privitisation and yet hardly a peep from them when it comes to something as critical as the memberships health and safety. They should be demanding in areas that they know are experiencing severe weather, that the management adhere concisely to their own management instructions and not to make decisions by looking out of a window from the comfort of their armchair, on a yard that is probably protected from a lot of the elements that we are having to deal with out in the real world of deliveries.

Totally agree.

My (stand-in) gaffer said over the phone this morning that anyone who couldn't get in would have to make up the time or take AL. When I questioned this, he said the Divisional Rep fully supported this policy.

Just checked the Union Website, of course nothing to say about any of this at all.

Doubt I'll make it in tomorow, but really don't want to lose 2 days leave.

There should be some clear guidelines to when we shouldnt be asked to deliver as well. The snow and ice is getting pretty bad round our area (Derbyshire) and theres no talk of cancelling deliveries! Heavy snow warnings have been released for our area and no ones even mentioned spikeys yet.

From the bbc website:
Police are advising people not to travel unless absolutely necessary - especially in the worst-hit areas of Scotland, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and south-east England.

No deliveries in Derby today! Its strange as the conditions were a lot worse on Tuesday and they just sent us out anyway. Would have been nice for a manager to call and let me know though instead of having to find out from the receptionist when i turned up for work! But anyhows yay no working in the snow! :nana

I dunno you lot expecting a communication company to actually communicate :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle

It is strange though in this day and age, you think they could have a texting system to those willing to give their numbers and inform them of this. Would also help in situations where the buses stop running or a forecast of even worse weather coming in

All deliveries cancelled in my area, must've had about 30cms of snow overnight.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

Day off today but looks like some or maybe all the posties managed to get out the door and deliver a walk between two as my office is doing the p&l. On monday our union rep decided to take his HCT and do all of his delivery...this is not showing a good example to our members, all it shows is that if i can do it so can the rest of you.
