You say you started as a postie, how long ago?
20 years, I was a Postie for three years, then PHG, then worked my way up....this is the only way in order to really know what the jobs about.
I have seen people, Grads for one come Straight into managment and lasted only months. do the job before working up the ladder,

Without too many details how many jobs did you absorb in your utopian office? how many jobs have been removed from your office ? do your 'staff' absorb , flex, book extended etc.
and whats the ratio of f/t to p/t , whats the reaction in your office towards the van sharing 'mini starburst'
do you have a pot for all savings ? or do you just accept your share of bonus pay as given to you by r.m for services rendered (working in other offices during strikes) ? :hmmmm

mmax,
In terms of the public and business perception of Royal mail,i believe it was mentioned on panorama, when
people see that red van they are automatically reassured, equally the most significant structure on the landscape
is that red box or literal 'pillar' of society.
The fact that we have had a monopoly has given the impression we are untouchable, and completely professional
in our procedures.
When you get inside Royal mail however, you see a complete opposite, and without having a go at you personally,a management of amateur intentions, and directives.
My experience is,a manager is handed a printout or has a support network to fall back on,take this away and actually
expect him to 'manage' and because they have no confidence in what they are actually saying, they resort to,in lord sawyers
words 'an authoritarian approach' in lay mans terms bullying.
In your opinion,as you see yourself 'above' this type of management, would you welcome lord mandelsons suggestion that
external mangement is brought in,and do you anticipate operational changes that can truly inspire and motivate the
workforce?

Hi Robd Well I am only a person don't see myself as "above this type of management" I am doing a job as best as I can within the parameters of what RM set.

Trouble is with outside management is that they don't have the experience of this industry better off with people within the industry.

Also the Management that are brought in by the government in my view are Hatchet men.

RM is on a cost cutting exercise no matter what, and RM will do what ever takes to achieve this, Personally I don’t think RM is too worried if it can motivate the workforce or not.

That’s how I see it

There's so much cheap labour around now, I think RM's attitude is if you don't like it fuk off, we can allways get someone else to do it and cheaper to.
Mmax,Do you feel that you are valued or do you feel that you are just another disposable asset?
Do you get a lot of pressure from above?
No I'm not being paranoid, they really are out to get me.

wolfie citizen smith... I am who I say I am thanks.... I'm not bleating on as you suggest, Iam just saying how RM are wrong, and I do stand up for my rights.....as I do stand up for the posties rights I work with, and they know it too.

I can assure you that I am not one of those spineless Managers in fact I do listen to my staff... I am not in it to see how I can screw over the staff to look after myself.........no way.... I have to work with my staff day in day out we have a great working and social relationship......yes in other words I do go out and socialise with my staff fantastic.... and why do you think that is?.....yes they know that I am not a two faced spineless manager who only looks after himself

I agree enough is enough blood sweat and tears money?? well put it this way if I have recieved any reward from royal mail as I have I have always made sure the posties have had a reward too, either from me personally, or via the business
mmax

thank you for your reply, however I would like to state that the staff you refer to are not yours, therefore dont explain things to me in a manner in which you believe the members you supervise within the unit they work in belong to you :no no
kindly do not insult my intelligence by stating in one breath that you took the recent reward money due the figures your coning colleagues falsified and then patronize the work force by patting them on the back regarding a job well done :wave

Apologies mmax,
i don't believe you see yourself as better than anyone else, and i genuinely believe you are true to yourself, and
have your staffs best interest at heart, however this approach is not representative of RM management as a whole.
i can see you are equally concerned and disillussioned as most of us,as to the real business agenda, thanks for your honest
assesment and view from the 'inside'

I for one have no intention of insulting your intelligence; I took the reward and rewarded "the staff" it was not money....please read the post properly .

The reward was because of a high performance that was spotted not because as you say" your coning colleagues falsified and then patronize the work force by patting them on the back regarding a job well done"

Patronized????? ..... They were well happy....... The staff got more of a "pat on the back" thank you very much

I accept your apology regarding your improper use of the english language, however I still believe you are trying to mince words with me, which i find unacceptable. The reward you claim was a "bonus" issued to all managerial Royal Mail employees from £15000 down to £4000 because your managerial colleagues in Scotland falsified the figures and have (as I have made to believe) been sacked. You and your managerial colleagues have no scrupples otherwise all of you who took the money should have given it back to the business.
I believe you believe your conscience is clear by treating the members within the unit you supervise (with the bouns money all managerial employees stole from Royal Mail) to a fish supper and a couple of pints :no no .
