You cant 'work from home' delivering mail though. Your home is not a sorting office/storage point. The way to cut indoor numbers is to stagger start time, and cut overtime.

Trouble is what if no-one wants to do the later start times. The problems of staggered start means you can’t go out till the vans are back which mean you can still be out at 6/7 pm. Who wants to do that every day. Staggered starts only work if enough people volunteer to do them.

Probably just about tolerable for some at this time of year (summer - still light) and on a temporary basis....but an absolute no-no if this was to extend into the bleak mid-winter.

Sorry if I'm on the wrong chat here, first time posting and looking for some advice.
So I work in an SPDO that would usually have a van share which obviously isn't happening at the moment. One of my colleagues has been using his own car to deliver a whole run (which I said at the time to him is going to cause a problem as he's going off on A/L). I rang the "manager" to explain we need another van to which the response was, "oh you'll just have to get by". I told him I wouldn't be able to complete if we don't get another one so now I'm the one that looks like a plank as all I get is "well if he can then you can." Told my colleague this and he said I should buy a car and do it that way!!
Any one had this problem before? I don't want to get the guy in trouble but I don't want to be the one with a target on my back either

Where has the van (presumably the same one each day) that you used to use gone?
You don't need ANOTHER van - you simply want the original one.

Sorry I didn't really explain that properly. So the van share would have covered 2 duties, now the van covers one duty and the other is being covered (stupidly in my opinion but correct me if I'm wrong) by my colleague and his car. That make sense?

if he is taking any mail or parcels in his car then hes driving illegally with no insurance, the cover is only for transport to the first drop.

Thanks. I've tried to explain this to him but has fallen on deaf ears. Obviously now leaves me in a pickle though as I've now got to cover his duty while he's off and all I have is a trolly to take mail, packets and bulk while trying to explain to the manager that it's not feasible.

I get you now.
You will be very lucky to get another van, as in most DO's it's either 1 in van and 1 in car driving to first point. Or 1 in van and 1 meet in the street.
The van you have for the two duties, 1 person will drive it out to duty, the other follow in car (which I don't agree with). The other option seems to be one person goes out at 9am, the other at 1:30pm etc.
The fact that your current partner has been using their car as a glorified RM van has indeed caused this issue.
If I were you, I'd continue to use the van as you have been doing, and it's the DOM's responsibility to get the other duty delivered.

maybe you should let the police know when he gets back then? The message will get through!

As for your issue, stand strong and tell your manager it is up to her/him to sort out. You get paid to deliver things not sort out how you get the equipment/items to the delivery point.

The van is used by another postie (my job is to cover A/L) so this is where my problem lies.

The problem is the other guy has been using his car to deliver mail. Seriously, don't do it. I know that you have been put in this position, but there is zero chance that the manager doesn't know what's going on here. Simply ask manager how you and the mail are getting to the duty next week.
