In the case of flowers they are normally ordered by someone else and sent as a surprise present.
How the f**k could the recipient know to be in when a surprise present is coming?
They aren't mind readers.
Obviously it can't be for everything. And don't be rude.

The RM has been run badly from the top for many years and there is nothing us posties on the Frontline can do about it.
I agree the method available for you to post your parcel sounded less than acceptable and not user friendly.
It was noticeable on Valentine's Day this year in our office that there were very few boxes of flowers to be delivered. There may have been other factors influencing this rather than the thought that the items might not be delivered that day. The virus situation began at about that point when thousands of people left China to attend New Year celebrations in other countries.
If the recipient doesn't answer the door and a neighbour is not available then it comes down to the position & location of the address. I personally will do my best to make sure an item is delivered if it is perishable. If the item is Tracked with an official Safeplace that defers some of the responsibility away from us and onto the recipient so they have to think about how it can be delivered if they are out.
I believe posties generally do their best and do a better job than the competing courier firms.
The views I express here are mine alone and do not represent the views of Royal Mail Group.
