I wonder what Mandatory use of Assigned Equipment means then :hmmmm
POSTMAN wrote:Q.My manager has just announced that as we are struggling to finish walks we can choose when to use our trolleys, is this right?

A. Absolutely NOT! All Delivery Methods equipment has been introduced to support the objectives of working safely, reducing fatigue and removing, where possible, weight off the shoulder. Once assigned the use of equipment specified for the route will be mandatory. If this issue continues please report the problem to your Local Rep or Local Branch who will provide you with the necessary assistance.

I always put any packet in bags if it'll fit, bag of mail, bag of packets. It's the quickest way to do it. The driver gets about 3 mins extra per loop to do packets! Like that's enough. Planning eh..........
This is one of my bugbears of working with someone who WON'T use a trolley. It means that they are taking less packets instead forcing the driver to take them, and then they wonder why they are stood in the street in the p*ssing rain for 10 minutes whilst waiting for the driver

I've been making this argument as our office is in the midst of a revision. If a loop is designated as 'pouch' then the loop has been determined as unsuitable terrain which immediately bumps the max weight down to at least 11kg. Moreover, the bag for that loop should not just be an LWT bags (with the hoops) carried on the shoulder. At the last revision, walks that were predominantly closes were issued mini pouches which limit how much you can carry. They disappeared quickly. Planner claims they aren't to be used.

And as for LWT use being enforced... This is the same company that stresses everyone must sign in and out of the office but wants nothing to do with clocking-in machines. My motto for the revision: I'll wear my mandatory hi-vis vest when you make LWTs mandatory.
The machine stops.

It means f**k all .
It's just words on paper to give the lawyers a get out of jail card, a bit like when there's a B&H case where one of the first questions asked is there any posters on Bullying on the notice boards.

Nobody uses the trolleys in our office, not a one, there was a couple of guys who did, but the mangers made their lives a living hell and the ended up following the sheep into running round with bags on their backs, our trolleys are all piled up in yorkies rusting away.
We was one of the first in the country to have Park and Loop, union and management don't seem to think Mandatory is relevant, in fact they go out of the way to stop the use.
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

Yep. Lightweight trolleys are probably used on about 5% of Park and Loop loops in our office (as a maximum estimate). Similarly, almost nobody (and certainly not one walkholder) pushes HCTs door to door, they use them as bag drops.

In fairness, some walks have changed themselves to 20-25 minute loops rather than 35-45 minute ones, so are carrying much less. But in general everyone just accepts that the walks are unachievable using delivery methods and so, whatever the rights and wrongs, just does their best to get the work done. It is not right but it is the reality and is condoned by management all the way up to DSM.

It's all in the rules. 5Kg max pouch in flats, 8Kg Max Pouch without LWT, 11Kg (I think) max pouch with LWT. If you make your pouches over 8Kg then you should use your LWT if it is assigned to your delivery. If an LWT is not assigned then you should limit your pouch to less than 8Kg. If an LWT is assigned to your delivery you cannot be stopped from using it.
