Pay offer update! 1.6% flowi ng thorough to all allowances overtime etc

Post by Martin Walsh »

You can look at this offer in a couple of ways , yes it is first open offer and could we get srome more possibly ? The offer has been made on the basis that talks on all other issues commence sometime in June. The other is that it is above inflation and the first pay without being attached to National Agreement like Pay and Mod , BT2010 or Agenda for Growth for sometime and the more we want the more Royal Mail will want strings.

Remember every 0.1 of precent is worth around 38 pence and would members want to fight for more ?

The bigger fight is coming ! If you really want to know the future read the WIK Report ucommissioned by Of Com released with the Of Com report. It is the most detailed report into Royal Maill and compares Royal Mail with other postal administration.
uh
It criticises Royal Mail for giving the legal commitments they have whilst other European countries outsourced their distribution and Logstics arms of the business. It criticises the commgitment to full time jobs in delivery.

It states that other postal administrations in Europe have introduced machines which limit indoor walk and Royal Mail still has roughly 40% indoor work. It suggests that Royal Mail should centralise indoor work in a few offices therefore having only outdoor work in the majority of offices.

It also suggest that in Europe postmen and women work from 2 or 3 bundles whilst we in Royal Mail sort ours in frames and work from one bundle. If you did not think Royal Mail were taking some of this on board than they want to use mediation over the union's refusal to accept the jacket which you can have Mail in the front and merge whilst out on delivery working from more than one bundle. This is jacket which is used in Norway and a couple of other European countries. They have tried to get it trailed in the Walsall OMP trial thereby reducing indoor work as you merge whilst on delivery.

So whilst pay is always important what is coming is going to be the battleground not whether we push them up 0.4 to 2% worth an extra £1.40 !

But I suggest you read the WIK report it also suggest that we have heavy and light days thereby reducing staff on the light days like other European Countries !

thats pretty much the norm in our office, you cannot physically do our loops in 1 bundle, we are verging 2/3/4 bundles depending on loop and how heavy we are.

1 bundle must be a very light loop/duty if only our duties were that easy!

He's talking about carrying more than one bundle at a time in your hand, to be honest I've travelled quite extensively in Europe and I've never seen anyone carry any more than one bundle, the housing profile in the UK is pretty unique as well, social housing in Europe tends to be huge apartment complexes, individual letter boxes are not that common in towns and front gardens seem to be a particularly British thing.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Thats not what that means

He means they have one bundle of sequenced mail, one bundle of manual and one bundle of door to doors for instance and ye need to take from each at every door.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next

Surely that's more labour intensive and gets away from the point of this report.

1.6% no strings is actually a good offer, sure we may "like" 10% but people need to live in the real world

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this the first pay settlement in years that took place without at least balloting for a strike?

Europe probably have an apartment block of say 15 home, then they can make one bundle for each block. But we don't live in apartment in UK as the majority of us live in houses.

Does anybody know what our basic hourly rate is? I don't have a clue. I know in london they get london weighting, think they get it at a lower rate outside of london. I don't have a clue what my hourly rate is.

if they do it this way (the Norway model), then deliveries will need to be only 3 hours long. because if you are working from 3 separate bundles its going to take about 5 hours to do it. :Very Happy

its a different stance from what you originally said though Dingo. a good payrise and a reduction in the working week. or is that your future wishlist? because this rise is in realterms is only about 2 quid extra a week on our takehome. and some posters think that's ok!!

So we get to vote on the pay increase and then the major changes will be negotiated separately? At the end of these negotiations will we get a vote on if to accept what has been agreed or will it just be implemented? That's a key point for me.
