How are you being disadvantaged as a part time ??
Not sure if you mean me but...I'm not being disadvantaged as a part timer, I'm being disadvantaged as a part timer who is trying to protect jobs by doing no overtime. According to the union, the part timer who works regular overtime will be (or should be) given more hours on their contract. Surely it should go on seniority?

It's not your responsibility to protect jobs. If you want more money, work your overtime and you'll get made up. Why would they make you up to full time when you don't want it?!

Welcome to the real world.... Imagine working for tesco on a 9-2 contract and not doing any overtime? A job for a full time position comes up, you and another guy apply for it. The other guy always does extra and is willing to help out. Who will

The part timers are being abused because they are on stupid hours. RM is abusing the PT need for extra hours by depending on them to work overtime and bail our understaffed offices out of the sh1t. If it wasn't for the PT staff working extra most offices would be in meltdown yet RM won't increase their contracts. Our part timers have been working excessive hours for a couple of years. At holiday time they are effectively on half wages.

I'm full time BTW

So you'd be ok with someone with low service who does lots of overtime getting the pick of easy duties over more senior employees so they can get back early to take out more work ? There's either seniority or there's not, just because someone is in the position to work over their normal hours doesn't mean they should be able to climb the ladder quicker

Sometimes it is better to make a point that a duty's total workload is in planet cuckooland by only working up to your contract time, day-in-day-out, rather than completing on overtime for most if not all days of the week.

Especially when RM still refuse to give you credit for that regular overtime through your holiday and sick pay.

Part time staff who do overtime won't get made up to full time over staff who don't do overtime. It goes on seniority.

If postman A is being asked to come in early to complete his duty and postman B on another duty doesn't come in early.
Then this highlights that postman A's duty needs more hours so that will get more hours. Then get advertised which will create another full time duty. Next in line for full time gets put to full time then.

What should happen, but never will, is all part time staff work their hours. Then royal mail will see that more full time staff are needed and will create more full time duties.

However understandably part time staff take what hours they can. Royal mail take advantage of this by giving the hours as overtime then saving money on holidays and not offering these hours during quiet times.

At Tesco - the manager decides.

At Royal mail - seniority decides.

And when exactly are the union going to sit down with management and start talking about a deal?
The pay rise would be due in April, yet unless RM and the CWU can negotiate, agree and communicate a deal in the space of a week, we are looking at a substantial delay before we get more money in our wages. Why don't the CWU get the ball rolling much earlier when making negotiations with management over pay deals ?? Come to think of it, why don't the union undo the work of Allan Leighton, and ask for a 6-month interim deal, moving the real negotiations to a 1st October implementation date ? Any foot-dragging by RM management on approach to an OCTOBER pay-round gives us the weapon of a strike threat... much more likely to focus their minds in the run up to Christmas than, say, protracted talks until mid-summer, when the threat of balloting the members causes hysterics at RM HQ ...

Pay rise this year?

We moved to April from October for two reasons nothing to do with Alan Leighton 1. April is normally higher RPI than October and that is the first point of pay talks and 2. In the 30 years I have been in the business we have never had a national strike over christmas ! It is a red herring ! I have been on strike at Christmas an Area Strike and believe me it hard to convince to take strike action over christmas as people have huge priorities which they are reluctant to lose money at Christmas.

Now let's thing clearly about what is happening sure we can get a quick deal on pay but it will be linked to one wave of sequencing Mail , later starts and less jobs.

Remember the RMT deal in night opening was a 3 year deal which is 1% per year and that is on the back of a ballot.

This is why the CWU should not be rushing into signing a blank cheque which moves forward Royal Mail's strategy later starts , one wave , reduction in collections closure of delivery offices based on a quick pay deal which even on a 2% pay rise is worth around a tenner !

Equally what about your pension ? Quick pay deal and Royal Mail announce in June there closing the defined pension scheme ? That is your deferred pay ! Your pension after 2018 is far less than you require and guess what you have to pay 2% more on pension contributions which means your pay rise has gone !

These are some of the reasons why you don't rush pay talks. Remember every big pay deal we have got has been based on an industrial action ballot and ways after the due date with back pay to that date ! A quick deal is not often the right deal !

There is a bigger picture and what strings do you want to accept to get a quick deal ?

dingo wrote:The Agenda for growth agreement is clear in terms of increasing part time contracts hours. It must be against the same workload each day or each week if a rest day cover and it must be workload which will remain. It cannot therefore be against someone on maternity leave , sick leave or a vacancy which will be filled. Additionally it cannot be against overtime i.e. a different walk each day.

The example would be that a part timer has been upgraded in their current duty to full time to do prep , double prep , IPS and a walk. Or a part timer has to protract their delivery due to the fact that there walk should be ready for them when they come into the office and they therefore have to prep their work. These are the part time jobs which qualify for an increase in contracted hours as they fit the agreed criteria !
The problem Dingo is that most P/Timers do overtime on the back of sick etc, this meaning they wouldn't get the increase inline with the agreement, the way this is being pushed around is that P/Timers should be getting an increase in contract. Office contracts should be in-line with the agreed TM1?
Headquarters need to clarify this situation rather than let P/Timers think their being miss treated.
The office had 9 FT on LTSick meaning plenty of overtime, RM are not going to increase contracts until either those on sick, leave on IHR, if those on sick all return the P/Timers will not get made up. FACT!

Most part timers do not just do overtime against sick or vacancies.
A significant amount of part timers work beyond their contract hours on their own duty because the duty was designed for a part timer but did not take into account new delivery points , more attendance calls or it has not been prepped when they come in and therefore they have to prep the work when they were meant to just be delivery only ! These should be made up now.

The issue with overtime and part timers working against sick leave is that you cannot have an increase in contracted hours because the person on sick leave will return and therefore the hours you would have worked against their duty would no longer be there ! Yes someone may always be sick but how many are sick varies from week to week so it is very hard to say you can have an increase in hours to cover sick leave but you will have to do a different duty sometimes daily or weekly.

In terms of part timers covering vacancies then I do thing there is a debate to be had as you could say that there is a 25 vacancy not filled and we are going to share those 25 hours amongst say 5 part timers so they get an additional 5 hours on their contract. The issue those is obviously this will mean a longer span for part timers as you are sharing the walk of the vacancy amongst the other part timers !

So there we have it. Assuming Dingo is speaking for the Union, the Union backs Newbies who work overtime due to the reasons he states above, over ten yearers who think they are protecting jobs by not working overtime.

Do you mean that literally, or just generally part timers when some in that office have been working regularly over their hours. I'm fighting the fight by not working overtime, does that mean a part timer who has been there years less than me but who works overtime should get a full time contract before me? How does the union stand on this?
I would say yes, because you don't deserve a full time contract.
Thanks for your support, Comrade.
