There's a bit of difference between putting d2d's together and doing lapsing, our revision was rushed in 2 years ago and the woman who was in charge at the time admits that mistakes were made but there has been no attempt to put it right,I start on time one of the few out of an office of about 100,Tuesday and Saturdays are the only time that I can comfortably do my round,we have 3 Doms who in the past tried and succeeded to intimidate people into coming in early so now for the majority of staff coming in early is the norm,we have one p/t who comes in at 6 for and 8 o clock start ,the majority of f/t come in 30 mins plus early and the walks are still only getting finished by time.Workload hasn't reduced enough to allow lapsing it's just looks that way because people think that it is still job and finish, most of the trolleys have disappeared because only a handful of us use them, management turn a blind eye even the rep doesn't use one.So thats what I mean when I say if everybody did the job right lapsing would be a thing of the past,we as an office don't do any lapsing but they are under pressure to make us do it,they keep saying no to any holiday requests unless we open up to lapsing, but why should everybody have to do more work on an already overloaded job just to free up a week or two for the lucky few to have a holiday.fishtank wrote:I take it you did everything by the book and you still had time to lapse tomorrow's D2D workload?DB1100 wrote:I finished about 10 mins early and spent that putting d2d's or whatever you call it together for tomorrow,we have 5 lots. And I wasn't the last back.
That's all Clash is saying, doing the job properly won't make lapsing go away.
It will certainly reduce the scope especially on busier days when only the idiots have time to do it but when workload is reduced sufficiently there will be lapsing no matter how you do the job.

Re: Summer savings and absorption post revision
Well I don't want to become embroiled in what is a simple matter, if there is time you lapse if there isn't you don't. I can't believe that under no circumstances are there conditions in which no lapsing is possible but there you are - what it does highlight is how poor the deal was and how different the revisions have been and how different people/offices have coped with the changes leading to disagreements. People coming in early and failing to use the agreed equipment is a national problem which, unless it is addressed, will never change.

Re: Summer savings and absorption post revision
With the amount of attendence calls we get now (oversize or signiture items) almost everyday being well above the 18 per 500 delivery points model (even with the recent slight decline since the price increases), the finishing time (and the amount of possible lapsing) is a very difficult thing to predict.
If you had say 50 attendence calls items and someone answered every door, those items might only take ~25 minutes.
If half answered the door promptly while half had to be P739ed, those items might take ~38 minutes.
If only a quarter answered the door, those items would take ~50 minutes.
If you do the job something very close to "properly", you have absolutely no idea how much time the packets will take and whether taking your "10 minute" bundle of lapsing is going to take you past your time or whether you really should have taken two bundles!
Cover staff will get hit worst because they will be less likely to know what size the letterbox is at no. 20 etc. and therefore have no reasonable assessment of how any attendence calls they really have. But ultimately, we all have no crystal ball saying who will answer promptly if at all and therein lies the problem with our business in these changing times.
Today was quite light by normal standards on a walk I know well, so I knew even with the smaller parcel workload I would not be able to complete within duty hours (even without the work time learning not happening... agiain as per usual) and they did not want to pay overtime. I took a guess at what I needed to leave and it was mighty fine, I handed over my failed parcels to the cage 1 minute before my time was up.

Re: Summer savings and absorption post revision
Without giving much away, you need to get onto your area reps people.
Lots of us have been getting onto ours as we have had a methods revision.
He has told my Dom in no uncertain terms that there is to be no outdoor absorption or summer savings,
The message I get is that it's almost a threat of you try it and we will ballot members to walk
Happy days.
I don't mind working all my paid hours, no more, no less I decide what that is, not a Lino or Dom who hasn't got a clue.
Finally a union I'm proud of

Why?
We don't have the f****d up revisions.
You and DB1100 do.
We have time for absorbtion and summer efficiency(which allows more leave) because our revisions although not perfect...are mostly working.
You don't because your's is a bag of shite which is heaping more pressure on your members.
As a rep in your position who presumably had some input into the shambles I would be doing a bit less of this
And certainly none of this..

Re: Summer savings and absorption post revision
Regardless of how s**t the revision is
Once you've had a methods revision cwu stance is no outdoor absorption!
That's it
I have nothing to hide or any shame.
I used the tools that the cwu and rm agreed.
I'm not a planner, I got told I was released.
I'm not gonna say no am I?
Jesus you sound like my Dom
He blames me too

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

That isn't a position the CWU could defend given that different offices use different model weeks.
The CWU position is no lapsing above model week traffic.
That is a position we can defend.

If this is legit, we should all be printing this off multiple times to take to our DOs and metaphorically waiving it in the faces of every section lino/DOM of a post-delivery methods revision depot.mandelsons_toenail wrote:No absorption or budgetary savings.

The real CWU position on lapsing/absorption is detailed in the april outdoor department
e-bulletin.
Lapsing / Absorption – Conference Policy
Branches and Representatives will be aware that the department has been in talks with Royal Mail on what is deemed as ‘Fair and Manageable Workload’ within Deliveries.
These talks have yet to produce an agreed document, but one of the key factors within the document is how we deal with Lapsing and Absorption.
This year a motion was placed before Conference which instructed the Postal Executive to pursue a set of standards that need to be in place before any lapsing/absorption of duties takes place within Delivery Offices. Below are some of the key aspects which must be adhered to:
Weekly Resourcing Meetings must take place each week
All staff sign on work to time (no early starters)
All staff have their Meal Relief
All staff are out on delivery to planned time
All staff return to the office
All staff use the correct delivery method equipment
All staff are correctly trained for all aspects of working in a Delivery Office
A FEW FACTS WHEN WORKING IN DELIVERIES
OVERTIME IS NOT COMPULSORY IN ROYAL MAIL
IF YOU FLEX 30 MINUTES YOU ARE ENTITLED TO BE GIVEN THE 30 MINUTES BACK IN THE SAME WEEK
WHEN TRAFFIC LEVELS ARE ABOVE YOUR MODEL WEEK YOU CANNOT ABSORB
DELIVERY TO A NEIGHBOUR IS AT THE SOLE DISCRETION OF THE DELIVERY OPG – NOBODY ELSE

Re: Summer savings and absorption post revision
Problem is that although traffic may fall... the level of call rates could be as high or higher.. hence to be able to 'lapse' the savings need to be made indoors ie getting you out earlier to cover more ground...
of course this never happens??... why??

I do wonder if we are all in the same union sometimes
