Of course the wicked Taliban would not allow an oil pipeline through Afghanistan from Pakistan. Was quite handy then that is where Bin Laden chose to 'hide' allowing the Yanks to invade.
IMHO, I was against the war, but being against the war does not mean you are against our armed forces. Boris, the amount our soldiers have killed is nothing compared to those comrades killing each other. I don't think our soldier are brave, just used by the system for the system. When you are sleeping, they could be on the brink of death. That is something I could not wish on them just because we had a TWAT for a PM. They deserve everything they get through our Post Office and for free.

sorry plodsie but the old German guard in the death camps argument of only following orders is not good enough, only the German guard would have found himself on the Russian front in Stalingrad or somewhere, our working class boys would have ONLY done a few months in the nick for refusing to go. the army is full of working class lads who have an addiction for violence and guns and don't care who they use them on and if they did then surely they would turn them on those that wish to oppress them. remember the firemen strike in the seventies and those green goddesses, yes it was the army and working class lads that scabbed and broke the strike, what about Harold wilson's government and the army ready to put the tanks on the streets- again the army and working class lads and do you think that if there was a time when we had a really working class socialist government that the army wouldn't sent the very same tanks that were sent to kill our trade unionist comrades conscripts in Iraq wouldn't be used against us?

Yes, thirty years of working for the Ministry of Defence has given me plenty of experience of what the armed forces get up to, and it's not all just the annual parade through the town centre and TV clips of them in action that most of the public are spoon fed. I accept that some work hard and are committed, but there's a fair share of scrimshankers amongst them and the hoardes of desk-bound pen-pushing officers need to be seen to be believed.pilsbury wrote:Lounge Lizard it sounds like you have know experience of being in the armed forces. When your miles from home its great to get a letter.Remember the great job they do.![]()

Has anyone heard any reasons given to back up their claim for free posatge, because there are many, many other workers serve queen and country and/or work away from home and/or in hazardous occupations who accept their lot without whingeing that they don't get free postage

Just a thought
Given our Labour govts passion for the rule of the Free market , why not open up the national security industry to full and fair competition.
Surely in these times it is not acceptable to continue to subsidise the armed forces with massive sums of public money.
The introduction of competition into this market would provide the public with freedom of choice for service providers, it would stimulate the market and promote much needed efficiency savings.
Establishing a regulator, say, Warcomm could ensure the millitary dont abuse their market position, and by making them self financing, cease public handouts.
The opportunity to develop new millitary products and services tailored to the consumers needs has been vastly under exploited.
Entry level competitors eg Sandline, have already recieved downstream access naval supply and support in the Sierra Leone market, so this is not an untested buisness model.
With Mark Thatcher performing Croziers role and Colonel Calan as a more dynamic and less odious substitute for Leighton our Armed Buisnesses future would be bright.
Get ready for part time service contracts, and squadies should be prepared to cover other conflicts in periods of calm.
