Can only assume in the nordic countries they dont get deliveries for 6 months of the year then, no wonder this country is in such a bloody mess, 2 days of snow and it grinds to a halt.

In nordic countries they use dogs to help get around the snow element. lol. Royal mail hire huskies to help posties!!!!!! Oh wait and sledges!!!!!

In Finland we use skies and sledges for foot delivery in snowy conditions and all our vehicles have snow chains on,and you have to have proper winter training to drive a mail van unlike the can you drive to Tesco's and back that passes as a Royal Fail driving assesment,oh and we don't have any prats wearing shorts either as it makes you look like one of Santa's helpers.

Today was no better or worse than Saturday, yet in the NE we cancelled deliveries.

Was worse today snow-wise than Saturday but we went out, most of the mail didnt reach us from Team Valley until too late on Sat.

I've just been phoned by one of my managers to say that I'm being pulled off my own delivery tomorrow to go on a longer route. Reason? Because the guy who normally does that other route says he doesn't want to drive around that area in the snow. So, he gets a shorter delivery, someone from that shorter delivery gets my delivery and I have to go out on 'the beast' as they call it in our DO. I said I would do it but that I genuinely had somewhere to be tomorrow which, being on this other delivery, will mean I'll not get finished in time to do what I had planned. They said they would try to work something out. Would it be reasonable for me to work my scheduled hours tomorrow and come back to the DO once I've hit my normal cut off time even if I still have mail to deliver?

Normally, I don't mind helping out and have done so more often than not, but I'm increasingly finding it difficult to say yes given that they have started to take advantage on occasion. This is kinda the final nail in the coffin. It seems like a case of, "Just put him on it, he'll not complain."

Sorry but I am stunned you even felt you had to ask that question. Not your fault if you have not been told before.

The answer is yes it is more than reasonable for you to finish at your contracted time even if you have mail left, as long as you follow the guidelines and instructions of your manager, and that you have told them before you left as well.

Thanks TrueBlue. I have actually brought mail back on one occasion in the past - during summer lapsing - and I got a serious bollocking for it by the DOM. What had happened there was that they had two of us out on the delivery one week (it was essentially an amalgamation of two and a half long deliveries) and the other guy - an old hand, and lazy - would only ever work to his time. So, every day I would have to drive him back to the DO and then go the whole way back out again in awful traffic and finish the delivery on my own. By the Thursday I was fed up with being out delivering until after 5 every day and brought a bundle and a half of mail back to the DO. What I had to listen to the next morning was unreal, and there were utterings of "disciplinary" and that it was unacceptable etc. I know they'll try to put me under pressure tomorrow when it comes to the crunch

The bollocking in that case was a reasonable reaction

The most important thing you must do in every instance where you know you will be unable to complete (and in my office if you are but will need to claim docket) is to tell your manager as soon as you know that.

If this means on arrival or during prep that is most definitely better, go to the manager get their guidance but stick to your guns.

If you are out on delivery and something happens to make you unable to complete then you must contact the manager immediately and explain the situation. According to the Mail Integrity agreement the manager should advise you how to contact him and this may include a card with written instructions.

This is why the manager bollocked you before if you did not contact him before bringing the mail back.

I did actually tell one of the managers before I left that morning that I wasn't staying out until half five that day. His word-for-word reply was "Just do what you can and bring the rest back." The DOM got me the next morning. Quite possible that he had words with the line manager as well but I have no idea if he had or hadn't. Wouldn't have minded as much but I was busting my arse that week and the other guy was doing bare minimum, not to mention the fact that at that point I was taking out extra parts of deliveries nearly every day for months before that. The old saying that they don't care how much you help them out but they'll jump on you as soon as you do something they don't like is so true.

Anyway, enough of my griping. I'll do that first thing tomorrow and see how I get on. Thanks again.

I know that we sometimes like to be fair towards our little pets in their warm cages drinking coffee
but the agreement states that we must inform our Dom as soon as possible ONCE we have thrown
in all our mail (inc D2D's). I keep getting told to tell them sooner but rules are rules

We got sent out in snow around 5" deep this morning, it wasn't too bad tbh being fresh snow, but it's snowed again and we now have around 7-8". I haven't got a chance of getting my car off the drive in the morning and no buses are going to be running. My DO is 6 miles away and AFAIK the other closest one is just over 3 miles (which I ain't walking to in the snow and they were sent home today anyway)

What's the score regarding not being able to get in?
