So long as you read the letter carefully before signing it, and it doesn't SPECIFICALLY give RM permission to check records. Then it can't get around the Data Protection Act. So if they DO try to get access to any information which you should have given authorisation for, with only a letter you signed, and it doesn't specify that, that's what they intend to do. Then they are in breach of the act, and you can take action against them.
