Royal Mail's Carbon Footprint.
Our achievements

We are one of only 57 companies that have been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard. This certifies that we’ve genuinely reduced our carbon footprint and are committed to making further reductions every year.

Carbon management

We’ve implemented a Carbon Management Programme to identify ways to cut our CO2 emissions. We’re reducing the amount of energy consumed by our vehicles and buildings, as well as addressing the type and source of the energy we use.

Vehicles

Our target: reduce transport-related CO2 emissions by 20%.

We have 33,415 vehicles which travel a total of around 610 million miles each year, consuming approximately 140million litres of fuel. We’re constantly looking for ways to reduce the impact of this fleet. For example, between 2003 and 2008 the road transport element of our mail operation’s CO2 emissions reduced by 13.4%. During the same period, the CO2 emissions related to air and rail transports reduced by 11.5%.

We’ve installed special technology in around 8,000 vans and trucks to help us operate them more efficiently. This will potentially reduce our carbon output by 7,000 tonnes and save 2.5 million litres of diesel in 2009.

We’ve also invested in a fleet of more than 300 double-deck trailers. These can transport 50% more mail than conventional trucks and therefore cut down on mileage. We estimate that the first 50 double deck-trailers have reduced annual mileage by 1.98 million miles, saving 3,175 tonnes of CO2 each year.

Looking ahead, alternative fuels have a big part to play in reducing CO2 emissions. To date, we’ve trialled and evaluated a range of alternatives to petrol and diesel – including Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), hybrid and electric. We’ll keep you up to date with progress.

We’re also training our drivers to be more safety and environmentally conscious, to help reduce fuel consumption.

PMSL at this lot :chuckle :chuckle :chuckle
Maybe someone should email the Carbon Trust and explain the plans for 2010. :hmmmm

Quote from the greenlady blogspot -

"The CWU have also been very concerned about the number of posties using private vehicles to get their deliveries to their delivery round due to the weight of the deliveries and a lack of Royal Mail vehicles. They are not covered by insurance when they do this."

If the CWU were so concerned why did they not make it union policy years ago to ban the use of private cars on deliveries?

I remember that slogan or something like it when I started twenty years ago. It was the old union rep's mantra. Last year our office, probably in protest at the Pegasus debacle, voted overwhelmingly to stop using cars on delivery. Other offices in the area still use their cars and you see their owners home while you still have two bags to deliver within your time. Is it any wonder the management think they can ride rough shod over everything when they see a union incapable of getting even a unified policy as simple as a car ban nationwide.

Cambridge green party have featured on local tv news on the issue of changing bike rounds into van rounds.

Untill the GP get MP's national media will pretty much ignore them so if you want info about what they are saying and thinking and why you need to look for it yourelf rather than rely on the media to drop it in your lap. The national website is updated on a regualr basis and there are many highly active local Green parties.

Greens condemn Royal Mail privatisation plans

Business secretary Lord Mandelson has supported the conclusions of a report by an independent review panel led by businessman Richard Hooper which advised selling 25% - 33% of Royal Mail to a foreign buyer. The current pension fund debt, which may deter potential investors, would first be taken on by the government.

The proposals have already proved highly controversial. It is estimated that up to a hundred MPs would take part in a backbench rebellion if the current plans went to a vote without modification. Jim McGovern MP has resigned his post as private secretary to postal affairs minister Pat McFadden in protest. And the Communications Workers Union has stated that it will disaffiliate from the Labour Party in the event of any form of privatisation.

The proposal also contradicts Labour's manifesto commitment to a "publicly owned Royal Mail."

Prospective Green Party Euro-MP for Eastern Region, Councillor Rupert Read said today:

"We strongly oppose any privatisation of Royal Mail. The Green Party has long campaigned against transferring essential public services to private hands.

"The Royal Mail is a cherished and trusted national institution first established as a public body by Oliver Cromwell. Even Margaret Thatcher thought it should remain publicly owned.

"Privatisation benefits big business interests, not consumers. We have seen this in the NHS, BT and the railways, to name a few instances. A report by Postwatch, the consumer watchdog, has failed to find any significant benefits to individual users from the 'liberalisation' of the postal service.

"Private companies will cherry-pick the most profitable parts of the organization which currently fund essential but unprofitable services like rural collections, leaving the public to pick up the bill in the future and leaving Eastern Region with a poorer service.

"To call for the part-privatisation of a major British institution at a time when the dangers of 'the market' have been so clearly exposed in recent months is clearly madness. The substantial job losses called for by this report are the last thing our struggling economy needs at the moment.

"Royal Mail has announced an impressive new environmentally-responsible method of business mail. This is a great example of what a public service provides and I am concerned that a privatised postal service would not come up with such innovative ideas."

Greens accuse Government of "dismantling" Royal Mail

Caroline Lucas, leader of the Green Party, today promised to "lobby at every level" in order to support striking postal workers and accused the Government of effectively "dismantling" Royal Mail with its ongoing programme of privatisation.

In a strongly worded letter to the Communication Workers Union - released this afternoon - Lucas, who is also the Green Party candidate for Brighton Pavilion, accused the Government of "ill-serving" workers and the UK public alike and criticised the Government for its "shameful privatisation of public services" which has led to "increased marginalisation and inequalities in terms of public access to services".

The move comes as the row over today's first postal strike escalated, with Gordon Brown calling upon the strikers and Royal Mail to "get around the table" to end the industrial dispute and the Tories attacking Labour for failing to deal with the crisis.

Several Brighton and Hove Green Councillors will be joining the picket line in central Brighton tomorrow (Friday).

In the letter to CWU Secretary Bill Hayes, Caroline Lucas says: "In our view, Royal Mail workers and management have been on a collision course since the private sector has been forced on the service. By removing profitable parts of the business for the benefit of speculators and investors, the Government has created an environment in which the interests of the population of the UK as a whole have been ill-served, none more so than your members. It is shameful that a Labour Government should have played such a role in the privatisation of public services, and in a way which has increased marginalisation and inequalities in terms of access to services."

"It is especially concerning that this Labour Government is not content with overseeing the dismantling of this vital service, but now appears to be colluding with Royal Mail management to undermine the rights of the Union and its representatives, and condoning the side-lining of the CWU in working towards the completion of the agreement from the last period of industrial action."

The Green Party leader offered the CWU the Green's full support in the coming days, stating that "...we hope that any action is swift and positive in its results. As we did two years ago, we will lobby at every level to support the CWU cause."

Lucas used the letter of support to draw attention to the fact that in Brighton and Hove during previous industrial action: "Green Party members and our active Trade Union Group joined the CWU on the picket line, Green councillors promoted your case, including getting Brighton and Hove Council to support your action, and we publicly backed your position."

I still firmly believe that the greens do not have the best interests of the working man/woman at heart they are but middle class ideologists like NEW LABOUR i for one will not vote for them!. On the other hand i think a new party left of new labour could gain support for the workers of this land.

Sadly the employer which pays our wages are investing in 24 000 vans at a cost of almost 170 million pounds to introduce park and loop in all offices.

Whether it will work , as reports vary on its merits. But regardless of that Royal Mail believe that the introduction of car derived vans will save them money in regards of replisnment time and support staff such as packet or small firm vans or 2nd bags drops.

Remember the introduction of car derived vans will be phased in over an 18 month basis. Once your office introduces delivery methods then all walks more than a mile will be planned on the assumption of car derived vans , the only walks which will be single walks will be walks within a mile from the office which will be HCT only.

Within the guidelines of car derived vans is a section on when 2 who are pair together on car derived vans do not get on.

The job is changing , not for the best in many ways , but if car derived vans stop people rushing around , coming in before their time , bans private use of cars on delivery and stops the use of bags on the shoulder and reduces the amount of back injuries then at least some good will come from them.

We manage perfectley well with bikes and use only 2 vans to do oversized packets/9am specials/tracked items in urban areas and drop off pouches.

I really fail to see how RM will benefit from HCT and Vans in my DO area. My delivery is within a mile and if I use a HCT instead of a bike I WILL take longer to do my delivery.
