It's not that you invisible without one. But that you're MORE visible with a Hi-Viz (hence the name). Even in pefect visibility, you stand out from the background in a Hi-Viz.lekker wrote:are you saying that without a high-vis you become invisible? my view is that if a driver cant see me pushing a great big red trolley he shouldn`t be on the road anyway and if I am it whilst on a path I cant see how a hi-viz jacket will save me.

so when we are all as MORE visible as each other - what do we do then to become EVEN MORE visible ?andy2007 wrote:It's not that you invisible without one. Re: Hi Viz vests
The idea, isn't to become more visible than anyone else. But to provide a contrast with your environment, so you're easier to see. For example: We recently had to change back to the old yellow Hi-Vizs, for everyone who needs to go in the Yard. Because of a fatal accident, which was caused by someone's standard Hi-Viz, being too close to the colour of the trailer he was walking past (according to the investigation). Although I still don't understand why we haven't had ALL Hi-Vizs replaced with the yellow ones.
They haven't even bothered to make yellow ones, that say Manager on them. So all of the Managers who need to go into the Yard, wear normal yellow ones. It's just the Managers who stay inside all the time, that have the new Manager's Hi-Viz.

Oh yes, they don't deny that and of course, employee safety is paramount... but they're meant to last 2 years...disgruntledpostie1 wrote:Any PPE must be replaced as and when needed (that would include Hi-viz and cycle helmets).Aprilaydee wrote:I wear my high viz ALLLLLLLLL the time but only really to hide my podge.
There's something on the intranet page stating that we're meant to make them last 2 years <coff>

Re: Hi Viz vests
A final point to consider regarding wearing or not wearing hi-vis vests.
If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident on duty and you were not wearing the PPE issued to you, whether it would have made a difference to the cause of the accident or not, do you not think that RM (or the other party) will use this as a reason to either not pay compensation or to pay a substantially reduced amount. Remember there are some very sharp lawyers who will argue that if you had been wearing one the accident may not have happened, and therefore you are at least partly to blame. Just think about it, unfair, yes. Unlikely, no.

amazing how millions of people walking to work every day, up and down escalators etc, don't require hi viz and yet someone dressed in red with a trolley or refelctive pouch suddenly becomes texas chain saw massacre and a menace to all that get in the way.

Re: Hi Viz vests
The next time they try telling you that they have to last 2 years. Just point out that they are only designed to be washed, a MAXIMUM of 25 times! for it to last 2 years, you'd have to wash it no more than once every Month!Aprilaydee wrote:Oh yes, they don't deny that and of course, employee safety is paramount... but they're meant to last 2 years...disgruntledpostie1 wrote:Any PPE must be replaced as and when needed (that would include Hi-viz and cycle helmets).Aprilaydee wrote:I wear my high viz ALLLLLLLLL the time but only really to hide my podge.

No, it's to protect you from the traffic. Re: Hi Viz vests
I know, I do the washing in our house and have actually read the labels... firstly, I'm not doing a "special" wash to wash something that doesn't need fabric softener and secondly, it still doesn't look bloody clean even if you follow the instructions. It's like the rest of the uniform really, not fit for purpose. The polo shirts are far too thick, the women's trousers don't follow any sort of size guide...andy2007 wrote:The next time they try telling you that they have to last 2 years. Depends on the size of your podge re the women's trousers
