Why do you think free trials exist for other services, such as Netflix etc? It is a common tactic to get you on board, try the service, and then attempt to sustain your business. As mentioned by someone else, it is a clever way of attracting customers who would otherwise use our competitors. Despite the companies attempts to damage our reputation, we are still trusted by the majority of the public and seen as more reliable than other firms.
Possibly off topic, there's a charge for keepsafe, never been a massive earner, I've noticed in my do we do get them now and again but it's great business charging the customer for us to not do something.

I guess RM have just ‘done the maths’ and think it generates more income than charging for it and potentially putting off people from using it at all. I have people who literally live on the same road as a post office having us collect parcels. Sure, that is lazy as all f**k, but good for RM and us.

Unless you have access to hard data [which you won't unless you are a senior manager] based on people's preferences regards leaving their house to post an item or pay X amount of money to have it collected from home then you are just blathering for the sake of it [as usual].
Personally, I value my time so if my round trip to the post office takes me 30 minutes and then I have to stand in a queue for 5-10 minutes then I'm thinking the 'cost' is far more than paying a pound for my postie to collect a parcel. But that's just me.

We are being paid our hourly rate and that translates into close to £1.50 every 5 minutes when you take into account pension and employers NIC. So it is a case of how that £1.50 can be most effectively used to generate profit.

i have attempted the 2 'obligatory' deliveries we now do, and the customer has requested a re-delivery on top of this THREE times now, and she wasn't in for it again today. she will no doubt request another, so there's FIVE attempts at delivery for the price of one. and thats just one of my deliveries. its happened a few times since this all started. how many countless times does this sort of thing happen all over the country? we should be charging after the 2nd attempt, if we are losing money its no wonder because of piss poor management decisions on how we work. they couldn't run a piss up in a brewery.
We have one guy on our round that gets between 15 and 50 parcels collected per day (the most I’ve done is 52 when we first started doing it but now it’s usually below 30)
They’re mostly small parcels and it all fits in 2 sacks
But his house is near the beginning of our round and we have a crappy little combo van that isn’t big enough to fit our parcels (for delivery) in
We have asked for a larger van and used to have one but it got written off and all our other bigger (newer) vans got sent to a neighbouring depo who’s in a clean air zone
So often we have to go back and collect the parcels at the end
It takes about 10mins to get from the end of our round back to the beginning in light traffic, when we’re working later and hitting the school run traffic it can take 25min
It costs petrol and time, which is fine because I get paid the overtime for it but it’s not cost effective for the company
If people are getting that many parcels collected then they should be paying for it
Many people still don’t realise that you can have your parcels collected so doing it for ‘free’ is quite a good idea. Saying that anybody who sends parcels on a daily basis should incur a fee but for many it’s just the odd parcel here and there.

Why's it a good idea, what are RM gaining by collecting a parcel for free when they could be charging a fee? In our Do we usually get 2 or 3 a duty so it's hardly taking off as having massive public appeal.
