But NI is also going up by 10%. And inflation is running at around 7%.

There should be a legal requirement that after each new pay deal is agreed, the union reveals what it was asking for in the first place.
All academic though as it seems to be the accepted way these days to drag on for 4-6 months, get a fraction of inflation %, plus £500 to sweeten the deal.

And the staff taken on? Despite quite a few new starters, we are still down in numbers from 2 years ago due to not everyone being replaced.
It's kind of like fuel prices going up 25p per litre and then we are supposed to be grateful with a 5p cut in duty.

In previous lives I too have worked for companies that automatically gave you a payrise each year, whilst asking nothing in return other than your continued good service and implied loyalty. It seemed like a thank you for your endeavours these past 12 months.
God only knows how our Union has gotten it into their heads that we have to give something up in return each year (Sundays this time, if the murmurings from our branch are to be believed). And, by some weird osmosis, us posties have come to expect we also have to jump through hoops in order to get a paltry payrise and back pay each winter.

I to worked for companies who would give you a crap 1% payrise but it was never attached to conditions it was a payrise not a paydeal,surely there isnt anymore conditions to be had we are streched to the limit as it is,im all for the union but that deal s**t has to stop.

I agree AD sick pay probably looks like a juicy target for RM's accountants. I know a lot of companies don't pay sick pay for the first 3 days abscence. It at least puts a stop to those shirkers who phone in every Thursday, or Friday, looking for a Long Weekend Off.
Longer Abscences are still protected. Lets be honest about it, that's what worries the majority of us, if we're off with a broken leg or a serious long term illness.

The stage system means those 'shirkers' cant repeat that too often though
