So its going ahead no letters delivered on a Saturday for a minimum of six weeks. Does anyone believe a word Rico says? He is playing the union, we want legally binding agreements not the word of a proven liar. Watch this space, this change will still be here in 6 months never mind 6 weeks, then expect job losses within a year, with the excuse of letter revenue going down so much its not economical to go back to 6 day delivery.

To protect our jobs we need to get rid of Rico, the man is a terrible CEO of Royal mail, he does not care one iota about his staff. The only way to get rid of him is to make share holders put pressure on him. We do this by striking. We all know its going to happen sooner or later, Rico is making sure it will. The question is how much are the workers going to get shafted by Rico before the union get the balls to do it?

So what exactly are your strike aims?

Is there anything in Rico's past history that makes you think he'll just roll over after a couple of days of strike? So how far are you willing to go and how many of the members do you think you can take with you?
Woody, You have made it very clear you don't have the fight for a strike.
No I haven't, I've actually been on strike many times and if I'm asked I'll do it again and again.

You fall into the trap of believing that you either support one position blindly or you're on the other side, I'm questioning whether we're being led by the nose into a trap. That's certainly what it looks like. Royal Mail have been dictating the terms from day one and now it appears that they've decided the time and place for a final battle by making sure all of the circumstances are in their favour.
I'll tell you what we can do, Go down fighting!

No genuine trade union member wants to "go down fighting". This isn't a game it's the financial security of over 100,000 people, people with families and mortgages and futures to think about. The plan is we don't go down at all.
Strike, Starve them of income and force them around the table. Customers will not except it and will look else where, Shareholders will s**t themselves and tell Rico to get around the table and sort this mess out
The only way you will starve them of income is a long and protracted all out strike, not a couple of days here and there which is what will happen. The problem with an all out strike is that you'll starve the workers out long before you'll starve the employer. You're right customers will not accept it, they'll go elsewhere. Shareholders will also.

If you plan for war you also have to plan for the aftermath. All I hear is empty strike rhetoric , that's not a plan it's a consequence I don't hear any ideas on what happens next.
Woody, you've done it again. You've used allot of words but somehow managed not to say anything at all. Iv told you what I believe our strike aims are/should be. Iv told you why I believe it will work. Iv told you in other posts that rolling strikes across the network can easily grind RM to a halt. Iv told you I for one am up for a protracted strike action if needs be. The current alternative is capitulation. Iv not fallen for any trap when it comes to you because you haven't actually said anything.

Look where the threat of industrial action has just got us. RM have been forced into a position of rolling back what would have been compulsory change to duties for the next 3 months (We know that would be permanent) to voluntary change for 6 weeks to be reviewed with guarantees from Ofcom, the Government and Rico that is will be temporary but reviewed every two weeks. If he had just come to us first and said this there would have been no trouble but he had clearly no intention of any of that and was being opportunistic. Do you think asking him nicely would have gotten us anywhere. Truly naive!

If he goes against any of this then we should immediately give notice to strike.

Totally agree. Union have been played in a way they dont even realise imo.
USO coming up for renewal and RM want to reduce service, but they have no hard data that would exactly convince anyone.
Now to this week. Propose to make Saturday non mail day and throw in a load of other stuff that will get the unions back up. Union threaten strike action. RM back down but non mail day stays for six weeks.
Now RM have six weeks to prove that a reduced service, with 20% or thereabouts less staff can not only manage, but produce more profit, if you exclude the sick pay.
Now call me cynical, but they will now have exactly all the data they want.
Watch this space indeed.

Woody you are one of the few on here who actually make sense and cover different angles on things. As you say it’s all very well banging on STRIKE STRIKE STRIKE but that is just a meatheads view on a situation. As you rightly say.... if you want to go to war at least have a plan for the aftermath but many seem to have the attitude that we’ll go out, f**k about round the brazier and in a couple of days it’ll all be over and we can carry each other victorious back into the workplace. That ain’t gonna happen. I also think you’re right in that we’re being led into a trap and many are willing to walk straight into it. If we do go out andI’ll be there if we do then I do seriously wonder how much support their will be and how long people can sustain it, my guess is the support while in the majority will diminish quickly. I think many will find out in good time this isn’t a game. IMO for the good of the company Rico, Terry and probably Ward need to go. Their poisonous relationship is killing the company and we’re all gonna pay the price in their game of poker.

This makes a lot of sense. Union ought to be advising members not to play along with this charade as a way to ease in these changes through the back door. If they did actually help in any way to temporarily ease the coronavirus pressure maybe it would be fair to apply the benefit of the doubt and give it all a go but they don't so why is anybody falling for it? We lose out in the long run here and we don't even gain anything in the short term next 6 weeks except some Saturdays off while everywhere is closed, no events are on and you aren't allowed to go anywhere.

Remind me again how the current union plan of do sweet fa has worked out? don't bother I will tell you--> Still delivering d2d, still delivering unimportant bs that no one really needs (90% of all parcels), putting our lives at risk doing so, still no proper social distancing in DO, oh and don't forget the end of letter deliveries on Saturday for a MINIMUM of 6 weeks (likely for good).

The union demanded we deliver only key material like NHS appointments and test kits, the complete opposite has happened, RM are using the pandemic to literally make a killing profit wise and postie wise. Union response for the last 2+ month was a few twitter/facebook posts. Then RM stop letter deliveries on Saturday, union response, Rico said its only for 6 weeks and you can still do your own duty ( union forgot to mention--> "and the other 3 duties parcels when you get back 2 hours early")

It's not good enough, the union need to show Rico that they are not the pushovers that they seem to be at the moment. We know bosses like Rico, give them an inch and they will take a mile. The union has allowed him to get away with so much in the last 6 months, he must feel he can do anything, and his actions(and the unions lack of) are proving he can do anything. So will the union continue to give us facebook posts and twitter memes are they actually going to face Rico down and stand up for their members? We will see how good Rico's word is when those 6 weeks go by and if our union is up for a fight or just content to write facebook/twitter posts while picking up our subs every week.

And we’ll see how long you have the stomach to stay out on strike for if one should be called. The miners thought they were unbeatable etc etc and that was in an era when unions did have power. How long are you willing to be out for..... 6 weeks, 6 months, a year. Then what - you either come back to F All or go and get another job, good luck in that with what’s coming in unemployment terms.

If Rico gets his 5 day a week, then I wont have a job anyway. This is why we should be willing to strike and do whatever it takes to stop it from happening. There are literally thousands of jobs on the line here if RM scrap the 6 day delivery and go to 5 days.

We are between a rock and a hard place right now. My heart feels that we will need to strike because the company is quite literally doing what it wants unopposed, but, my head is telling me to keep calm and go through these 'interim' changes begrudgingly.

As frustrating as it is,it's really not the right time to do battle with our employer head on by calling a strike.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

There were thousands of jobs on the line when we moved to a single daily delivery.
There were thousands of jobs on the line with the mail centre rationalisation programme.
There were thousands of jobs on the line with the introduction of ILSM and CSS machines.

In fact tens of thousands of jobs have gone over the past decade without the need for compulsory redundancies.
And what cast iron guarantee does anyone have that striking will actually protect their job? It might just hasten the demise of everyone's job security.
The world of RM is a very different place to pre privatisation.
The world is a very different place to 6 months ago.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Fully agree.
In fact given the usual levels of natural wastage within RM there might not even be any VR's on offer, or certainly at least not very generous ones, never mind compulsory redundancy.
Also agree that everyone's jobs are potentially on the line if people continue to go on about us being a ''public service'' and claiming how important it is to maintain the 6 day USO in it's current format.

Cant believe he union are getting stick they have played the hand that was forced onto them and played it as well as they could. Getting Rico to talk is a miracle well done to them you can bet no letter Saturday will be gone in two weeks because Ricos plan has been busted.

Quite right. There are a couple notable posters on here who are conveniently not addressing the fact that RM and Rico only changed their tune and addressed the issue after the threat of IA.

It's quite pathetic to have a dig at someone while replying to other people. It's the Internet equivalent of talking behind someone's back. You have continually resorted to personal attacks during this thread and behaved with a complete lack of class.

In addressing your point I'm not married to any particular theory, I'm just not the kind of person who blindly follows anyone without thinking for myself.

If you seriously believe that RM and Rico changed their tune after the threat of IA that's up to you, the fact that it's completely out of character for the man seems to have passed you by but you're entitled to your opinion, it's not a case of me not addressing that it's just that I don't think you've made a coherent argument worth addressing and basically I don't believe it's true. That's my opinion.
