My gut feeling is that over the next 5-10 years, that'll happen to most DOs. Probably the first to go will be ones that can't handle 17 ton lorries and ones where the lorries have to park in the street to unload to the DOsted_e_bear wrote: ↑19 Feb 2021, 14:18there's no talk of it yet but I'm dreading the day that I hope isn't coming when they announce we're moving to an industrial estate along with the next closest DO's which are both about 6-7 miles away in different directions.

Re: Drab office
Old office was fine then merged and quite frankly it's a disgrace and not fit for purpose.

Don't worry, when you merge it's the bollox especially if YOU go into a different postcode, the peeps there will welcome you with open arms, party atmosphere every day , scratching each other back ect, you will probably ask yourself why didn't this happen yonks ago...

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Drab office
I'm guessing we were lucky then. We moved from an office in the centre of town to a purpose built building on an industrial estate about 3/4 of a mile away in 1999. The old land now has 60 apartments in a three storey building. We have 45 vans and there is plenty space to park all of them plus all the staff cars. Large yard so 17 tonners have no problem offloading. Loads of floor space for 50 duties. We could easily accommodate another 20+ duties. The toilets are immaculate. Upstairs we have a 40ft long canteen with pool table and dart board, microwave, fridge, vending machines etc. There's even a boardroom/training room up there. It's a million times better than the old 1960s office but the location is a bit crap. I used to like popping 50yds to the pub on a Saturday with the lads for a "couple" of pints but there's only a couple still bother. I think the amount of space we have is the main reason we were designated a LAT office.

Re: Drab office
RM will obviously sell off as much property as they can, especially in areas like London where prices are ridiculously high, but is it basically "Selling off the family silver". Once it's gone (for a one payment to the shareholders) it's gone.
TBH I don't think my DO has a lot to complain about (although that won't stop them trying ). We've got a fairly modern indusrtrial unit which has enough space, with a bit to spare. The Yards fairly decent with just about enough space for all the vehicles. Like most DOs it's become a bit tighter with the extra vans over Covid. Biggest problem we have is Early Finishers parking in 1 1/2 parking spaces because they're unable to judge distance.
Most staff can park nearby, and I've worked in enough DOs to know that's not the norm. Weymouth for example you had to park literally a mile away and spend 10-15 mins walking in.
Managers could park nearer of course, because they can't do too much excercise.

Re: Drab office
Wouldn't of thought it would come in to the mix at all, 2 offices merging is 2 offices 'sharing the same building' and not 2 offices going into 1 mass merged postcode unit.Dorset Plodder wrote: ↑22 Feb 2021, 12:27Slightly Off Topic ......But I'm surprised at this!ted_e_bear wrote: ↑20 Feb 2021, 08:27Haha, it happened a while ago where my mate works, a repick was eventually triggered and they f**kin loved it when a couple of the incoming seniors took cushy numbers![]()
During a recent discussion about amalgamating a nearby DO, the idea was to keep the Postcodes separate. There was a BIG Flap about some of our "Chosen Few" losing their cushy duties .... But their "Chosen Few" already had their own cushy duties, and knew Bugger All about our area.
So it was agreed we'd basically be two DOs just working out of the same location. Guess what stopped the Amalgamation? RM wouldn't make enough savings out of the deal .... so it got kicked into touch.

Re: Drab office
Mostly true and we've been doing it for 15 years with two reps and two seniority lists and separate repicks but...two thing that do become one are the boss obviously and the budget which can make the whole thing difficult to keep on top off.We try as much as possible to keep separate reserves and workplans but they will nick resources from one side to shore up the other.POSTMAN wrote: ↑23 Feb 2021, 11:53Wouldn't of thought it would come in to the mix at all, 2 offices merging is 2 offices 'sharing the same building' and not 2 offices going into 1 mass merged postcode unit.Dorset Plodder wrote: ↑22 Feb 2021, 12:27Slightly Off Topic ......But I'm surprised at this!ted_e_bear wrote: ↑20 Feb 2021, 08:27Haha, it happened a while ago where my mate works, a repick was eventually triggered and they f**kin loved it when a couple of the incoming seniors took cushy numbers![]()

Re: Drab office
In terms of size ours is ok, but the workload is getting close to maximum capacity for the office, and it was brought to the fore over christmas and the various days we havn't went out because of weather conditions.
We have a large yard which a 7.5 tonne can fit in, and it accomodates all our vans, we even have a sort of 'overspill' area which isn't specifically for any use, but we park extra vans there are some employee's park their cars. The yard is an absolute mess and I'm embarrassed about it tbh.
The building leaks at points where it was extended a long time ago. The place is hellishly dusty and generally just kept in a bad condition - the cleaner doesn't have enough time to do their duties. There are various RM 'things' everywhere - trays, bags, drop bags, D2D.
The canteen is awful and gets absolutely abused with no care whatsoever, so as you can imagine there is ripped wallpaper, carpet, chairs, stains from food and drink, we don't have vending machines any longer. People seem to put things in the fridge and never take them out - there are leaking cartons of milk and various other liquids & foddstuffs which are out of date. The gas hob & oven unit looks like something from the 60s and is all rickety, but it works. Our cutlery keeps going missing, people put plates in bins to get a laugh, and are just generally messy. There are never any paper towels.
The toilets seem to take an absolute pounding and I can only imagine it's due to the poor diet of junk food, energy drinks, coffee, booze and fags which contribute to the monthly blockage.
Upon typing this, I've realised I resent my colleagues awfully. I can deal with the crap management pull and can give as much as I get, but the carelessness and disrespect of my colleagues in the environment is what will kill me

Yup, the toilets just being toilets, it’s the people using ‘n’ abusing them that’s the problem. I hear that at one of our larger sites there’s someone who consistently picks their nose and wipes it on the wall of the toilet ! No limit to how disgusting some folk seem to be !
