The point is, that if the ID Cards (and Biometric Passports) are considered to be such reliable proof of identity, identity theft would be almost absolute! We all know that existing forms of ID from around the World can be forged by a small number of experts (for the right fee of course). If your ID Card was forged, how would you prove you really are yourself?dawatticus wrote:Personally I wouldnt mind having an ID Card....
If it would remove some of the hassle you get when youre applying for new jobs ("Please bring 928 forms of ID, including a letter from the person who runs your local swimming baths, a photo of you doing the tango in Asda, signed by a local buddhist monk ..... etc etc"), or applying for a driving licence, and all of those things then I cant really see the real problem?
Its not like they couldnt easily get the information they want anyway, its just bringing it all to a central location making it easier to get to. Plus.... who cares if they have your finger prints? Its not like theyre going to be out dusting down lamposts to find out where youve been - theyve got CCTV for that :D
They are putting far too much faith in this flawed system. If it was only to be used in conjunction with other types of ID, as existing Passports and Driving Licenses are, I would have no problem with having one. But they are intending to use the cards as a (supposedly) more reliable form of ID, and that really scares me. Don't they realise the dangers of "putting all their eggs in one basket"?
