Furloughed workers : The 80% thing
When the Government stated that Asthmatics should self isolate for 12 weeks, I expected some sort of guidance from above. On the Friday morning I informed my manager I'd be doing so. I was asked to see him before I left. He informed me I'd be on unpaid leave, but I could apply for SSP (this is false as it's the payrolls job to do this. I can't, as an employee, do this). I was then given a couple of options.. Night shift (I can't as my asthma can't adapt to the hours) or just to go to offices, no contact with the public. Judging by the amount of ill people who come to work on a daily basis fearful of losing their job, I counted this out. Furloughing was announced that day.
Today I contacted HR to ask if I was on a furlough list. Waste of time. They're reading from a script. It's basically accept our help and get a Doctors line and take up to 6 months full pay or suffer on unpaid leave. They haven't even considered furlough. We'd get 80% of salary, which would help a great deal, and Royal Mail would treat us as unpaid leave.
I can't see the downside.

So far, from what I can gather, the furlough is only for people who would otherwise be laid off due to being unable to do business, due to the virus, Royal Mail is still running and will be for the foreseeable future, so no furlough, seems unfair but at the same time we are not in a position where are jobs are currently at risk, so there is that. The Demented Bread Boffer wrote:When the Government stated that Asthmatics should self isolate for 12 weeks, I expected some sort of guidance from above. I too have been forced to take 12 weeks off and I am also on SSP right now, even though we are not sick which just seems incorrect to me anyway, we are off to protect ourselves from sickness, not because we are sick.
Royal Mail should be paying us and hopefully eventually will back down on this but I wouldn't hold your breath.

Im off work to protect my wife as she is in the vulnerable bracket as well as being pregnant. She's currently laid up in hospital as she quickly become unwell with one of those conditions yesterday. The government have completely neglected the group of people I fall into and so have RM. I have been forced to take leave and when that runs dry it will be unpaid special leave. Cheers RM, Cheers Boris. I will remember this.

The furlough option also applies to those who can't work due to the prevailing conditions and, no, I won't be holding my breath (chance would be a fine thing).I fully expect nothing.bergos wrote:So far, from what I can gather, the furlough is only for people who would otherwise be laid off due to being unable to do business, due to the virus, Royal Mail is still running and will be for the foreseeable future, so no furlough, seems unfair but at the same time we are not in a position where are jobs are currently at risk, so there is that. The Demented Bread Boffer wrote:When the Government stated that Asthmatics should self isolate for 12 weeks, I expected some sort of guidance from above. public authorities

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Martin Lewis site says those at home looking after kids can be put on furlough, so the thread does not answer this.

And I would imagine part timers are stuffed.
I usually do 40-46 hours a week but I'm down to my basic 20 to watch the kids during the morning.
Def noticeable in the pay packet. I try to remind myself at least I still have a job but a part of me is a bit annoyed at being out at work while others stay home and claim probably more than my basic.

Obviously not, it was just an observation on myself and other part timers who are still at work while other claim for more than we are getting paid for being out in danger or have lost the OT that normally gave us a full weekly wage.Chelseablue wrote:Stay at home? However many of my friends and family have either lost their jobs completely, stopped working temporarily and it is not lost on me how lucky I am to have a job at all.
Please don't turn it into a "being greedy" thing because it's absolutely not and I apologize if it came off that way.
Over 20 colleagues at my work have left on sick, stress or self isolating.
We still have no ppe like many others, it's obviously frustrating for everyone.

I don't think it's all roses and sunshine for the folks who are stuck at home, paid or otherwise...

Thank you..like I mentioned many of my friends and family have lost jobs almost immediately... It's been awful to see and not lost on me.
Myself and my wife are both key workers and qualified for childcare but we gave up our place so others, with more immediately important jobs could get the places for their children, such as NHS workers etc, regardless of losing overtime that gives me a bigger pay packet on top of basic 20hrs.
Good luck to everyone struggling and otherwise.

Yeah, my wife too. But we'll get by. Remember there's the Rowland Hill fund if you're experiencing any financial difficulties...GoingPostal86 wrote: Like I said many of my friends and family have lost jobs almost immediately... It's been awful to see.

I'm in processing at an MC in the south.
I'm in the awkward situation of having become, in the last six weeks, the main carer for an elderly relative who is very vulnerable. I currently reside with her. I have avoided going into my MC for the last couple of weeks because my chances of getting infected are so much greater if I do and if I contract the bug it is inconceivable that I could stay with her: she is dementing and would not be able to mutually self-isolate with me at home. I would have to move out. Unfortunately, the social services care package she has in place would be utterly inadequate to meet her needs and she could not cope living alone without me. In the current climate there is no option of residential care or even a hospital stay.
I have financial responsibilities of my own (e.g. a flat gathering dust, a car) and cannot afford to keep taking unpaid leave. So I am due to go back into work next week. I will be playing russian roulette with my mother's life. I have been hoping that some provision would be made for people in my position, such as being furloughed until Covid-19 is out of the picture. Are my responsibilities as a carer more important than those as a key worker? If I can stay put we have a chance of muddling through.
I feel awful looking for a way to get out of going to work when my mates are going in putting their health, and that of their loved ones, on the line. Blood is thicker than water? Ah, what a shitty situation.
Keep safe guys
