Coronavirus: Posties offer to halt strike and act as a 'new emergency service'

Don't know whether we should laugh or cry at this suggestion by the CWU. My wife and I are boyh in high risk groups. Phoned DOM today to tell him that I would be following government advice for vulnerable groups and self isolating only to be told that he had a heart attack 5 years ago and if he was working he expects everyone else to. Now Union sell us down the river yet again with this idea. I for one will not put my wife's health in danger.

Sorry, do people seriously think we should still go ahead with industrial action with all this going on?!

I for one welcome the CWU move. I hope RM and the Union can find a way to put us to use helping those who need it most. We have the infrastructure and manpower to be really useful.

Vulnerable employees and those affected by the virus MUST be treated properly, of course, and not be harassed or expected to put themselves at risk.

It's a well thought out bit of strategy in my opinion...the union are attempting to remind the government that we used to be a very important publicly owned service...and could/should still be.

The offer makes it hard for the current RM executives/asset strippers to ignore as our workforce (and probably more importantly our fleet) could potentially be of massive use to the nation.

A good bit of PR.

They clearly state that our health and safety would have to be considered if we were to get involved.

So it wouldn't be for everyone...but it would put us posties generally in a very positive light...a win win situation ?

I've already been asking my more vulnerable customers if they have a support network in place. If they don't, then I've offered to help them myself. I'm not going to quit on the people who appreciate me most just because some fecking hedgefund manager thinks I'm a number on a database. Time to turn the tide and get us back to where we were. A public service for all. If you are worried about making yourself or others vulnerable then keep the same 2 metre rule that the company are advocating.

there are professional people and agencies to look after vunerable people
not up to us interfere
you forget your place you are their to represent us and convey our wishes and demands not speak for us and make ludicrous decisions on our behalf

I'm with the above! Yes we can set dates for industrial action but we will just look like a bunch of twats! People out in the real world in the last few days have suddenly found themselves out of a job and it's only going to get worse then in a few weeks time we have a couple of days on a picket line

That's going to go down well when the aviation industry has been mothballed and no work, theatre/leasure sector has closed no work, pubs/restaurants closed no work nobody will give a shite if executive action is imposed on us and the union probably knows it

this is unprecedented time for the UK and dare I say the rest of the world so unfortunately this dispute will have to wait for more stable times so with the union taking the moral high ground is probably the best of an impossible situation? Interesting times but definitely not for the good unfortunately

Trouble is if we wait for the Coronavirus stuff to go away, by that time chances are that RM will have forced through a load of EA which a doubt the CWU would have any chance of getting reversed. Also if we wait too long we risk the ballot validity expiring, meaning a new ballot

Agree, A reminder of the potential & a responsible stance puts the onus on RM to react likewise.
