doesn,t matter if mail is down its call rate that counts and its not down
and if everyone took their d2d as per sections for the day and not stream them with mail deliveries would never be finished early

The mail is not down as much as they are saying. The reason it looks worse than it actually is is because for years they weighed the mail to get an estimate of how many items we had. Now with machines sorting a lot of the mail they can get a much more accurate figure

Although I do agree mail is down in general today was a huge exception... 9 full trays of mail and a full york of pkts for a single duty, felt like digging out my Christmas hat.

(Oh, and double lapsing)

well obviously the lapsing wouldn't have been doable with all that.

Eg: delivering ten letters through one door takes longer than if it were just one letter through that door; but it doesn’t take ten times as long.
Exactly.

Mail is definitely down. It is ridiculous to argue otherwise. We are still seeing pretty high call rates though in my office, so you still end up going to a majority of your calls, only with just one item in a lot of cases. Parcels too IMO. We are seeing a lot of larger items, but really little else.

The issue we have is, as I said, high call rate, and because we barely have enough sorters of a morning, we aren't getting out early on delivery and thus the volume of work doesn't really equate to easier days, especially when combined with absorption.

Maybe part of the answer is make cold calling just with D2D standard practice on all duties on every working day including Saturdays.

Most duties only take where addresses have other mail and very few if any duties have any to deliver at all on Saturdays, for a nice early start to the weekend.

We now prep all d2d's in on a Monday because too many were being returned each week, far more than the 1% target. Most people prep theirs in on a Saturday or before official start time on Mondays.
This means that come Friday/Saturday you have very few left in the frame undelivered.

:arrrghhh Everyone by now must know that RM are ruthlessly trying to cut hours and still we have people gifting their time to them. The mind boggles.

letters with stamps quite often are not cancelled , so does this mean that the sorting machine has not counted them, hence that would not count in letters volume posted

Edit;

"Commissioned by Royal Mail and drawn up PwC division Strategy&, the study predicts that there will be a “short term high rate of decline” until at least 2020.
It adds: “We expect limited recovery of those volumes, given interviews with direct marketers suggest ongoing cautiousness relating to the regulation and increased cost of ‘compliant’ data, together with wider economic uncertainty”.
However, it predicts that from 2020 onwards, the rate of decline will slow, driven by perceived ongoing value of direct mail as a marketing channel, supported by both interview and business survey feedback. The report predicts that initiatives such as Jicmail and Partially Addressed Mail will also benefit the market."

Partially Addressed is the new advertising mail product from Royal Mail.

second class letter is 61p.

Average ebay package is about £4 - call it 6 letters = one package.

I'm not saying one equals the other but you can't talk about fewer letters without talking about more packages. Internet shopping has gone mental in London.
