What and have the bus driver work for nowt?Carew wrote:The local bus cost 1.40 for 4-5 miles journey.
My car does about 40 mpg (roughly) Let say it use 1/8 a gallon for the journey - it cost about 64p each journey roughly. So why are we paying 1.40 for the bus ?

Why not? There's people in RM doing it all the time, coming in early, working through their breaks, finishing over their time but not claiming OT for it.Carew wrote:

They need to make the Buses safe first.
If they seriously expect us to start using the Buses instead of our Cars, then they should make them safe. At the moment, even new Buses, have 50 year old safety standards.
Why should we give up Air Bags, Seatbelts with Pre-Tensioners, Crumple Zones, etc., etc.. And risk being thrown into the Passenger in front, or worse still, be hit from behind by another Passenger. Just because Bus Drivers are highly trained and professional, doesn't illiminate the risk of accidents. They share the roads with everyone else.

Point taken! There's also those coming in on time, finishing before their time doing more work still finishing on time and booking overtime. Spooky!Throgg wrote:Why not? Unfortunatley the price of petrol is not going to drop, i know at my MC the amount of people now cycling to work has risen a lot. As for compairing buses to cars if you add in car tax, insurance, M.O.Ts and general wear and tear its a hell of a lot cheaper to use the bus over the year, but its a lot more hassle!! This country needs to create a transport network thats clean, reliable and cheap jesus it can be that hard they do it in the rest of europe!!

Using Public Transport is cheap compared to cars, but you get what you pay for. The inconvenience of using it, is just that: inconvenient. That's not why I don't use it.weetrogg wrote:Unfortunatley the price of petrol is not going to drop, i know at my MC the amount of people now cycling to work has risen a lot. If a Manufacturer tried to sell a Production Car, with no Seatbelts, Crumple Zones, Air Bags, etc., they would never get it into the Showrooms! As far as I'm concerned. Unless they start imposing the SAME safety standards on NEW Buses. Including Crash Tests, that they have for Cars, I will continue using my Car.
Obviously, it will take more than a decade to replace all the Buses currently in service. But if they had started fitting Seatbelts, when they did it for Coaches. There would be a large proportion of them in use now. They have to start somewhere.
