Union rep put in a request for a few of us, as far as I knew it had been declined. Now I find out one fella got his made up & he’s a few down on the seniority list. But he went to school with our PHG so I guess that makes it ok.

Iv heard a lot of newbies being made up before full timers, in various offices, maybe it's because they are willing to do the extra, obviously from Royal mails point of view it's better for business

It’s absolute bullshit how is anyone ever suppose to progress in this firm when doors are slammed in your face all the time. I am next in line for a contract increase, I am willing to work overtime & do almost everyday including 6 days a week when required. Yet new starts & cry babies get treated better.

It doesn't matter if the Dom wants an easy life. That's his problem. He is there to manage and yes seniority is still in force. I cannot believe how much DO,s work so differently from each other these days. There is a lot of hard working reps doing an excellent job but there seems to be more and more that have given up or are in it for themselves. There has always been some looking out for no 1 but it seems that head office doesn't know what's going on in area or sorting floor or maybe they don't want to know because they know they have been beaten and there is no way back. Maybe its RM way of getting back for all the years when if a manager spoke or treated you badly, we were all out and other offices came out and it was quickly sorted out. Pity your didn't stand by each other as much now and you would be amazed at what yous could and would achieve. Don't believe the bullshit that other postal companies will step in to take your jobs. There are no other postal companies that are set up for the so called last mile and not one with the capital to set it up. All these other companies do is pick up big mailings and hand it over to RM. The biggest con ever was to tell yous that your jobs are under threat from these twats. Stand bye each other FFS.

A lot would like to believe that seniority is king, but this would be in breach of the Equality Acts, question it with your manager & ask him/her to put it in writing .... No chance

Managers can't be arsed to put anything in writing.
And seniority does not go against equality act in every instance.

What happens if you don't know about an upcoming full time contract. And the manager gives it to someone below you in seniority. Can you do anything about it?

If it was displayed/advertised correctly - No.

If it wasn't a grievance is possible, but then they would be unlikely to overturn the decision but would agree to stick to the proper process in the future.

There was a situation in my office where a revision took place, but was not officially signed off as it didn't fix much, more papered over cracks so to speak. All posties are still on same walks pre-revision except one who was newly made up to FT. A FT reserve above him demanded to be put on his walk as he is more senior, despite also being a reserve, yet they won't allow the new FT to sit on a walk that someone below him is occupying.

Seniority is still used on resigns.
Seniority is supposedly illegal to use to determine annual leave. We still use seniority for annual leave but go from top to bottom one year then bottom to top the following year etc.

As you use Juniority one year and Seniority next that does NOT fall foul of any laws as it gives people equal chance to pick what they want. It's also one of the methods suggested in the agreement that deals with seniority and leave.
