yeah the situation is completely out of control right now. What managers need to be doing is also looking at people who STILL are returning to offices 1. even 2 hours early and sending them back out with loops that others didnt have time for. For some reason managers seem to be scared of the runners / people with easier duties, and put pressure on people who are doing the job as they keep telling us they want it done and have longer duties.

What they want to do is patrol the ones who are leaving their lapsing and skiving away, not the ones who do their allotted work and have the misfortune to return to the office just ahead of schedule and are made to take out the work left in by the aforesaid skivers. It's funny how lapsing is rarely left on a Saturday...

What kicking out with their head up their arse OH the Ostrich mentality famed up and down the land in every UK office of the Royal Mail Group!Spigot bearing wrote:Lapsing. A total nightmare. I can only describe our 'manager' as aggressively dismissive.

I saw someone driving home in their van at 12 noon today (I deliver to their street), and I didn't get finished till nearly 2:30pm!Postie45 wrote:yeah the situation is completely out of control right now. Don't underestimate the power of the 'old boy network within RM'. In our office there is one person who everyone, including line managers and DOM, knows makes at least an hour a day and is usually off more than an hour and a half before his finish time (works his breaks, comes in a bit early) but he's pally with a lot of the local managers so he's never questioned.Postie45 wrote:yeah the situation is completely out of control right now. Thing is that lots of people are season ticket holders of football teams and they come in early and run round to finish in time for the matches. No good finishing at 2.30pm and miss the match.DGH wrote:Don't underestimate the power of the 'old boy network within RM'. People have a life out of RM and they keep moving the goalposts(mind the pun) and people are losing their social lives on a saturday

1. im not talking about a few minutes, im talking about the people finishing AN HOUR + earlybmccoll wrote:not the ones who do their allotted work and have the misfortune to return to the office just ahead of schedule and are made to take out the work left in by the aforesaid skivers. 2. not all deliveries are equal, and a lot of times its those with the good fortune that have an easier duty returning early
3. actually Saturdays do see a lot of failed lapsed duties in my office - less people want to do OT, people tend to book Saturdays off more vs any other day of the week all means they cant cover the duties = more lapsed duties, but also keep in mind workload is less on a Saturday, the days lapsing tends to struggle most is Wednesday= Friday and likely varies depending on your office.
4. yes if people are taking the piss they should be dealt with too

There's an agreed process for going about negotiating working hours. While I am not saying that process is working well and I wholeheartedly agree that it would be nice to finish by 12.30 at the latest on a Saturday, the fact is RM are allowed to set the duty times and have done so. Just because one has a regular social event that those duty times conflict with isn't really a justification for changing one's hours according to one's own whim/desires/needs.eastie wrote: People have a life out of RM and they keep moving the goalposts(mind the pun) and people are losing their social lives on a saturday
I'd like to work 5.30 to 1.30 every day. I'd like to use bikes on some duties. I'd like a few other things besides. But as the CWU have not negotiated to get those things, here I am working to 1430 on Saturdays on a shared van duty. I don't like it much but cheating the system is not the answer.

But RM are now cancelling vans on Saturday and even though we get in at the normal time the 7.30 van gets cancelled and we are waiting around meaning we are out later causing later finishes over time or cut offs and aggro from DOMs.
Lapsing would get done on Saturdays but with Gatwick cancelling vans on a Saturday and presumably saving money at their office it causes problems at delivery offices

Yes, it's true that inefficient attempts at cost-cutting elsewhere in RM are impacting on deliveries.
Unfortunately the management is obsessed with slashing hours as a means of cutting costs, which is a superficially attractive way of cutting costs but is often ineffective.
I'd like to see more honesty across the company. I'd like to see more junior managers standing up for those they manage rather than pressuring them into attempting the unachievable because they themselves are under that pressure.
But while a substantial (and it is quite substantial) minority of delivery officers are not honest about when they can and cannot lapse, while most managers will not back their honest staff and will not challenge those routinely lying about their capabilities but will happily pressure many who are truthful, while the whole of the RM way of working is essentially dysfunctional, it's not going to happen.

It helps boost their bonus!!!!!!!!osgoody1970 wrote:and this for me, is the problem with the lapsing procedure, it just gives managers a green light to bully and cajole posties into working over their time and that's not what the lapsing procedure was designed to do!!!

The trouble is and always has been managers have their favourites that get away with everything!Postie45 wrote:1. im not talking about a few minutes, im talking about the people finishing AN HOUR + earlybmccoll wrote:not the ones who do their allotted work and have the misfortune to return to the office just ahead of schedule and are made to take out the work left in by the aforesaid skivers.
