So just how would this work for part timers on all their many and varied different hours and days?

Can't see that working as in MCs most days it goes down to the wire getting dispatches cleared as it is, losing an hour a shift would probably just result in every shift failing everyday all year round

When F/T hours have been reduced in the past P/T hours have stayed the same but their hourly rate was increased to compensate. So (a big) if this proposal did happen a P/T employee could actually get the better of the deal

Two points.

It would be a reduction in gross hours, so it wouldn't mean the removal of paid breaks.

It would be phased in over 3-4 years giving the business the chance to reshape its resourcing model.

A possible third point and this is just a personal view but I can't see royal mail going for it without some form of banking/annualised hours in return.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Can't imagine many part-time staff wanting to work less hours so I'm not really sure what you mean by screwed over.

Well, full timers getting the equivalent of 39 hours wages, for 35 hours work, but unless overtime is available for the part timers, they will still get e.g. 30 hours pay, for 30 hours work.

part timers wages will be higher because the hourly rate will go up

A full-time member of staff would get 35 hrs wages for 35 hrs work.
A 30 hr part-timer would get 30 hrs wages for 30 hrs work.
Both would be on a higher hourly rate.
Only the part-timer would take home more money than now.

....part-timers being screwed over again?

Well that sounds like an administrative nightmare to implement as ''part-time'' constitutes anything from 5 or 6 contracted hours per week up to 30+ hours, so all those hourly rate increases would need to be calculated on a pro-rata basis

Sorry if I'm being a bit thick but I thought the whole crux of this potential deal is their hours get reduced to 35 whilst their pay stays at 39?

What?
There is one hourly rate for everybody.

I currently work 39 hours. For simplicity let's say I currently earn £10/hour = £390/week
If I move to a 35 hour week my hourly rate will be 390/35 = £11.14/hr

If you are on 30 hours you will earn 30 x 11.14
If you are on 20 hours you will earn 20 x 11.14
If you are on 6 hours you will earn 6 x 11.14.

Why is this so complicated?
Round up the usual suspects.

Exactly... The hourly rate is the same for all. Part timers are not any "better off" than full timers . It is true pay would increase for part timers but full timers working less hours for same pay means parity for both.

I'm almost certain that P/T staff have a very slightly higher rate to compensate for the 1hr reduction in the working week for F/T staff given in a previous wage deal

Removing paid meal relief would constitute a wage decrease!
