End of F/T staff ?

I'm sorry but I just don't believe that forgoing what is in all reality NECESSARY wages for a month is going to prove any point! RM (and any company for that matter) would much rather find the next tit off the street rather than say "wow, that postie has such conviction lets up his hours". A bit of real world thinking please chaps.

As for why we take jobs that are advertised as part time, I took this one because of the very good hourly rate and because I knew full well that I wouldn't actually be working part time hours, as is the case with most jobs these days. I was working as a labourer on a zero hour contract before I came to RM so myself and I'm sure most of this forum can tell you that, unfortunately, part time or zero hour contracts are fast becoming the future. We're not in an economic climate that allows for us to put aside wages for the sake of trying to prove a point.

Don't get me wrong, if I were in a financial situation where I could afford to lose a month or two's wages then I would - but then again if I were in a situation like that I probably wouldn't be a postie :left:

If you want to make a point then be prepared to hit the gate....together, that way everybody goes home with the same money for that day...f**k all.

It's a little thing called solidarity.

Rule the roost kings norton? You've had one too many festive drinks because that's way off reality. That part timer is human just like you and has financial needs just like you only thing is they don't have the full time contract like you!! Hence the need for overtime!!! Simple logic

I hope all of you who are defending the NEED to do overtime as an excuse, to let Royal Mail get away with these contracts are happy with your sub standard holiday & sick pay

The problem is that when a full time vacancy arises there should be a meeting between the DOM and Local Rep under the filling of vacancies agreement sometimes known as the Stoke Agreement.

It takes about 12 weeks to recruit to a vacancy so there is ample time if the local Rep cannot agree to go through the disagreement procedure.

The first thing which should be discussed is are there current part timers working above their contracted hours on the same duty every day ?

If so there would be an argument that this individual should be given an increased contract and maybe the resultant vacancy filled by recruiting a part timer.

In line with the Way Forward the most senior part timer not necessary the part timer who has actually been working the additional hours.

The discussion in line with the Stoke agreement are based on workload and in principle is there enough inward work ? Sadly due to automation , improvements in Address Interpretation and Tops 2000 and the buddying system the indoor work is reducing.

The counter agruement is sick leave has increased. Attendance calls , parcels , door step scan , tracked etc has increased and time outside is often longer.

In terms of overtime bans or work your hours , the reality is what happens when the manager takes you off of pay which they have done before. You end out unofficially and whilst there is a time for that ! The best way is as Fish says ballot for strike action.

Next year there will be a national ballot on a whole host of issues ranging from pensions to later starts to data capture etc.

As Dingo says don't forget Seniority. If I was to stop all O/T there is at least 15 p-timers plus all the ex full-timers who took pay out to be part-time. Zero chance of full-time ever being offered to newer staff.

Can't just ban all overtime, that would massively disadvantage the part time staff more than full time.

Banning all overtime over 39hrs would cause a big problem here as so many do 50+ hrs a week. The majority here would usually do 45 hrs or so at this time of year.

That ban would be fairer for all if it came to such a state.

Its all played right into RM hands , they know Part timers want and need the overtime so they just keep chopping away the FT duties , ironically when they Part timers want a full time duty there wont be any left. Royal mail are playing the long game and if as a work force as a whole don't start acting now it will be game set and match. A simple Overrtime ban/ work to rule nationally over a matter of months will cripple this company and put the workers in a the driving seat for whats going to be a lot of turbulent years to come. Just a couple of months OT ban/work to rule and this company would be on its knees.

Which makes complete sense but how many people can afford to lose a third or half the wage they're getting? How do you propose those people pay their rent or mortgage, feed their children for a month or two? I do understand the looking at the long term issue, I just don't think it's realistic on such an extended period of time.

Planning ahead is the only solution. Everyone knows that there are issues on the horizon and if the delivery staff are to obtain a reasonable agreement it will only be as a result of industrial action to obtain it. It is in everyone's interest to put aside a few bob while you are getting the overtime so that when the crunch comes it will be so much easier to make a decision to support/not support because you will have some savings to fall back on. The main thing that stops people supporting a justifiable cause is their personal finances and effect on their families. Get prepared, talk with your family, make savings now and you CAN make the decision that will benefit you in the long run.

This

Its going to happen im fairly certain it will and if as a whole we go into any dispute continuously covering up the major flaws and problems with this company then the next deal will be the nail in the coffin and you will be in line with how Amazon staff are being treated.

I suggest doing what we did. Worked our part time hours on Wednesdays the office was f****d 2 weeks running 16 people were made up shortly after that.

Literally just 1 day a week will do the job until you get what you want
