Yeah, they can't give you a stage I warning for scratching your head or taking your fingers off the keyboard for more than five seconds. Someone in management is having a go because they KNOW that would never stand up at an employment tribunal.
What they CAN get you for is a repeated failure to code up to the set standard. Even then, they first have to document it (something which a lot of managers are too lazy to do) and then they have to allow you to be retrained and coached.
In short, you have a lot of leeway, even if you don't know it. The Royal Mail isn't like the real world. You've got to be really c--- to get the sack.

i once got in trouble for leaving a mail piece on my screen whilst i turned away to sneeze.ChainsawKiller wrote:Also at the MDec if you take your fingers off the keyboard for longer than 5 seconds you are in trouble and they threaten you with legal action stating you are purposefully delaying mail. I got in trouble once for scratching my head when I had an itch. They also put in seating plans and in the past certain teams have put bans on talking.
When i started this job 4 years ago they pay wasn't bad considering (at the time) you didnt need to know much about any thing or need any qualifications etc just as long as you could type.
But as the years have gone on each pay rise had been so far under inflation its becoming difficult to live on the wages we get. And on top of this the job has changed so much we are now required to do and know a lot more, without any extra pay for doing so.
Also every year we've had to see the rest of royal mail get a better pay offer than we have been given (although they were still not always that good), but finally it seems the union is taking notice of us as well this year and are doing a grand job in fighting for us as well as all the other parts of the company. so count me in on any strikes. I'm counting down the days until that ballot paper arrives through my door. I think most people at mdec are fed up with the company only incudiung us as royal mail when it suites them

unfortuntly there aren't enough people at mdec willing to join the CWU so they cant make such an impact as they can at the mail centres. i think we are still just under 50% membership.britwrit wrote:Yeah, they can't give you a stage I warning for scratching your head or taking your fingers off the keyboard for more than five seconds. Management do try to get away with alot more at the mdec. a number of people (5 that i can think of off the top of my head) have been sacked over various things and the union has managed to get them their job back so RM are obviously doing somehting wrong when they sacked them. Trouble is there are many more who have lost there jobs and not bothered to fight so RM get away with it most of the time.
They are really hot on issuing stage warnigns for sick absence as well. you can alsmost guarentee that if you have had 14 days in a year (even if you not had a single day for 2 years before that) you will get the warning. even if it was a life threatening illness and you were in hospital.
At one time they were trying to issue warnings if you had a hospital or dr appt that was in work time (thankfully the union put a stop to that one)

Hi Jessika , get yourselves organised pronto. Get your rep, if you have one , or your area rep
to start a recruitment drive amongst those of your colleagues not in the CWU. More than ever , it pays to be in an organisation
dedicated to your protection from rogue employers, and boy, oh boy , Royal Mail are fastracking their way to rogue employer status.

sorry dirtyharry but the union rep on our shift is a bit slow on the uptake
i could see where management were going last week when we were asked what our opinions where on the 2.5 pay rise or the £600 payment
as they were asking us very nicely to put down on paper what we would prefer, our rep did nothing to stop this or to tell the union members not to take part in this so called vote
i waited and got in contact with chris webb who told me to take no part in the voting, and then the next night we were told that all the data collected was being sent on to someone.
i think they would have used that data to take to the meetings that are being held between cwu and royal mail at this moment in time

As LTommo says , it's just propaganda. Have a word with your rep and get him to get as much
information over to the staff as possible , and above all else ,
Vote "YES" to industrial action in the upcoming ballot.
A huge "YES" vote will do more than anything else , to let senior management know just how disatisfied we all are.
Best of luck, dman.

People at the MDEC (especially plymouth where i work) want something for nothing, they see it why should they pay £11 a month for the union when RM will do what they like anyway.I am a union rep at a Mdec centre. When I became union rep very few of my shift (3 people as far as we could tell) were in the union, now the number is rising. Its about convincing people. You will always get the anti union pro-royal mail w****r, but f*ck them. Move on to a person who might listen. Those not in the union will be the ones left out when trouble comes there way, thats there problem.

I sometimes marvel that we ever had a British Empire , or that we managed to hang onto one for
so long , or that even at our lowliest moment during WW11 we still managed to beat the gerries off , when I hear that from a proud,
never say die , fight for what's right , race of people, we've mostly become a race of inactive whingers. Honestly mate , if I heard
anything like the comments you hear , I'd be kicking some arse, I can tell you.

no honestly the other day i was lectured by someone saying how a strike would be bad for royal mail :so then he carried on and on and then said that if it did come down to the vote to strike he would carry on working regardless
so i turned round and said thats fine as he wasnt in our union anyway it didnt matter what he did

wind-up merchants.
People like that do wind me up big time ,MDEC101. You did right though , you've told him
to look at the union board , and left it at that knowing full well that the twonk wouldn't join the union no matter what.
If I live to be a 100 , I'll never understand the mentality of a working man who thinks the union is his enemy.
The kicking ass bit in my last post , LOL , I didn't mean litteraly , I'd verbally kick ass !!!
