Re: 5 days delivery.
I was told similar about Saturdays last year. One of the managers who visits our office said an exercise had been done, and they had worked out they could save £400 million a year, but at a loss of 10,000 jobs.

Re: 5 days delivery.
Seems to be plenty of rumours on this subject but the worrying part of it is has anyone got any ideas how they'll go about losing 10-15000 delivery staff ?

And what about the poor souls who will get made redundant? Who's sticking with them?comeracing wrote:If and when it happens the union should stand firm and demand mon - fri, some of us have a life outside of work,on a personnel note I have kids, and would love 2 days off together SATURDAY & SUNDAY.we need to stick togetherLounge Lizard wrote:Won't be Saturday off.koolishy67 wrote:90% chances for Tuesday offMost likely Monday.
“Shorts,in this weather?!”
“If they’re bills I don’t want ‘em!”
“What’s she been ordering now?”

Re: 5 days delivery.
I doubt there would be many, if any compulsory redundancies. RM could even phase it in region by region, office by office to allow for natural wastage, VR takeup etc. The real losers would be all those staff on temporary contracts as they'd all be let go straight away.Cedar_Room wrote:And what about the poor souls who will get made redundant? Re: 5 days delivery.
Agree with the last post. If RM went to a 5 day week the temp contracts will go first followed by EVR. then voluntry redundancies and the final push would probably be no more recruitment for vacancies just fill the jobs with current reserves in the run up to the changeover.
They might consider a Monday to Friday delivery week with Parcel/special delivery on weekends for a few parttimers 9am - 1pm

They will do what any business does - seek the cheapest, most cost-efficient way.ted_e_bear wrote:...... has anyone got any ideas how they'll go about losing 10-15000 delivery staff ?
I doubt the shareholders would consider anything other than compulsory redundancy terms.
They couldn't use seniority for that as that would probably amount to age discrimination.
They couldn't use first in-first out as that would probably discriminate against part-time staff (and wouldn't remove sufficient hours)
So it will probably have to be on a skills basis.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Trouble is, if Bob 'do as I say, I know best' Gibson is involved, then it won't be Saturday offcomeracing wrote:If and when it happens the union should stand firm and demand mon - fri, some of us have a life outside of work,on a personnel note I have kids, and would love 2 days off together SATURDAY & SUNDAY.we need to stick togetherLounge Lizard wrote:Won't be Saturday off.koolishy67 wrote:90% chances for Tuesday offMost likely Monday.

On second thoughts - adios non-drivers

Re: 5 days delivery.
If things continue to decline. I can see it going one of two ways. Mon- Fri. There is no way business/commerce would allow a working day of the week go by with no mail delivery. How many firms demand a Saturday delivery? I bet more would demand a Mon/Tue delivery.
As on the news the other night. Three day deliveries. This would have massive implications. Half of delivery staff could be without a duty. A Mon-Fri working week could be achieved with minimal staffing reductions. As already mentioned. VR. Temp contracts etc.

VR would cost something in the region of 750 million pounds. (assuming 15 000 x £50 000)Fatboyslim wrote: As already mentioned. VR.
Compulsory redundancy would cost a maximum of £14 000/person.
My statutory redundancy payment based on 15 years service is around £8 000.
Anyone who thinks the business is going to shell out the best part of 3/4 billion pounds needs their head examined.

I'd imagine any non driving floaters will be up s**t creek then.
If you tolerate this, then your paid break will be next
