Re: longs and shorts
What does your employment contract say??
Generally, the employer and employee need to agree to any contract change with proper negotiation with employees or their TU, with the reasons for the changes and to have listened to alternative ideas from everyone involved.
The same applies if YOU want flexible working i.e. flexible start and finish times. From 30 June 2014 (consult ACAS if they were made before this date) ALL workers have the legal right to request flexible working - not just parents and carers. Its called making a statutory application http://www.gov.uk/flexible-working" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and if they don't handle the request in a reasonable manner then you can take them to an employment tribunal.
If your office has not been properly consulted, I would involve the CWU branch secretary and inform them of this.

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Re: longs and shorts
Two things about longs and shorts, is annual leave done hourly and not daily ie: 39 hours x 6 weeks? As people could be short changed if they have a Tuesday off as one of their odd days.
Also if you are a reserve and you are given more than one Tuesday off in a 6 week period, you would be doing more hours than you are paid for.
