Well, if the Public Sector workers aren't content with only a 1 per cent pay rise then they can resign and get a better jobstephenb19578 wrote:Public sector workers get 1 per cent pay rise and they have to stay to the end of their shift, we get over 3 per cent and still some of our members moan about having to finish an hour or two before their time.

Re: One per cent
The stress my wife puts up with as a nurse is horrendous,so much pressure from the nhs to keep numbers right and patients suffer because of it and who gets blamed when they complain? Nurses.
So when i hear people moaning about the "stresses" of being a postman i have to bite my tongue and just ignore it because they really do not know what pressure and stress actually is.This job is physically demanding (more so to some than others) but most of the time the amount of stress and pressure you feel is what you decide you are going to feel.Basically it comes down to how you are and how you deal with petty issues, some people get so worked up over silly little things it really is pathetic.

I agree with that as I once went out with a nurse and the sort of days that she used to have were really bad with people actually screaming into her face, not nice.2pints wrote:The stress my wife puts up with as a nurse is horrendous
For some its very real though. Typical RM scenario :2pints wrote:So when i hear people moaning about the "stresses" of being a postman i have to bite my tongue and just ignore it because they really do not know what pressure and stress actually is
People have child care commitments so may have to be at a school at 3pm to pick up their kids. They come into work and the delivery which should be prepped is clearly not as someone has gone sick and the Dom has decided to get a walk prepped for overtime instead as its a heavy day and people really don't fancy doing extra.
Straight away you become stressed as you realise that you will not have enough time to prep and complete your delivery and get to the school. You approach the Dom to inform him / her of this but as the dom has already been on the conference call and told the SOM that all is covered the dom dose not want to hear this. The reality is that the dom may actually have to take out your cut off. So you get a intimidating response which may contain threats to your future employment.
You are now under stress and pressure. Either way if you try and get the work done or you go to your rep to complain this is real pressure, make no mistake.
You could be facing this situation every time you walk in the door, day in day out.

Soldiers killed and maimed,
Nurses dealing with dead and terminally ill.
What do they know about the stress of 7 D2D?
I did say office workers with in the public sector. Trouble is the public sector is so huge its hard to put it all in one box.

My wife is a ward sister on the Cardiac Care Unit at our local hospital and my daughter is a Health Care Assistant on the emergency surgery ward at the same hospital, they both do 3 x 13 hour shifts per week and more often than not work well over their time with no overtime paid and because of the nature of their jobs quite often don't get their breaks either.I think £30,000 for that nurse on TV is not enough for the rigours and grief of the job that comes their way on a daily basis.I know that I couldn't/wouldn't do their job but both of them love it,bless them.Judgee wrote:The public sector is so varied you can't really compare it with RM. Some public sector workers are paid a lot more, some get worse money than us. Some work damn hard, some do feck all.
We got a decent pay rise this year albeit with strings attached. In other years, public sector workers did better than us. Taking one pay rise out of context is completely pointless!
There was a nurse being interviewed on television complaining that her £30,000 salary will only increase by 1%, Some might think that amount of money is pretty good to start off with. But unless you are a nurse, you don't know what they have to do for that money or if it's a fair amount.

Oh I wouldn't swap with them either Dave. My main point was that you can't really compare salaries for completely different jobs. The original poster implied we should be grateful for the rise we got because public workers will be getting less this year. To me that's like comparing a basket ball with a can of Tuna, completely out of sync and pretty pointless really!

So could many posties, but they'd rather constantly moan about how much they hate the job than even consider leaving.Lounge Lizard wrote: Well, if the Public Sector workers aren't content with only a 1 per cent pay rise then they can resign and get a better jobbut, no, they will just moan, wave a few placards, talk about strike action and carry on regardless.
As for public sector workers, my wife is a teacher and has already been on strike a couple of months ago and will be striking again on the 26th of this month. She may get paid a lot more than me but she also works a good 20 hours per week more than I do. Our job is a complete piece of p*ss in comparison.
Remind me how many strike days we took during 10 months of CWU negotiations.

Some posties get finished early - some don't
If we're going to argue that because others have it worse then we shouldn't argue for better pay and conditions then it's time we started sticking 5 year old boys back up chimneys and under factory machinery - after all, 3rd world kids have it worse.
We should look at who gets the best deal and then argue for everyone to get similar quality deals - not see who has the worst and drag everybody else down.
