WCM is a way of bypassing the union. Management speak to small groups of workers, especially the ones who see their manager as mummy or daddy, and agree changes behind the elected representative's back. Management can then claim consultation took place. If they had to bargain with the union, they would have to give something in return for the changes they want. WCM allows management to make you work harder for nothing in return. You will not be allowed to talk and you will be timed when you go for a sh*t. They will get rid of duties and make everyone a reserve but their favourites will not be asked to work where they don't want to.

Don't speak to managers, don't accept lifts from them and don't socialise with them. Their job is to persuade you to work harder for less money and they get paid bonuses for doing this. They will try to persuade you that all your workmates are the laziest bastards on earth. Don't fall for it.

Not if 'union rep' is involved at every level of wcm - doesn't mean that you'll end up with a better working system.

And that tasam is one helluva big IF. If the union rep doesn't play ball do you think the manager is going to say "ok then"........not a bit of it he'll go direct to the staff who will no doubt go along with it for a bit of docket and a pat on the head. This is yet another divisive tactic to be employed that the union just doesn't see. The CWU firmly believe that the union is involved at all levels................what a farce, there'll be tens of dozens of offices that doesn't have a rep.

Oh that's funny. What's funnier are the posts from posties moaning about how they have done the job for 140 years but nobody ever asks them about change.

What about asking managers though Brian - surely RM value your input, by the way any thoughts on what you'd like for a leaving present :whistle

No surely not, I can't believe Bri is a hard liner, I imagine him to be reasonable, level headed and fair minded and more than willing to listen to experienced staff :whistle

I don't know if or when I will be leaving yet. I'd probably be interested if VR came up but there are also likely to be some new opportunities and because of my skills and experience and because my input is valued I may not get the opportunity to go. So I wouldn't start the collection just yet. There's no chance I'd qualify as a hard liner but if some think I am then it's no wonder there is so much complaining about B&H.

Bri let me put your mind at rest, you'll be going sooner or later, these new initiatives on productivity will include team leaders and expensive managers will not be part of Royal Mails plan even though there's an overarching agreement to avoid compulsory redundancies, it is only to avoid it and we all know how RM are at sticking to agreements. Still you don't have the protection of the CWU - well maybe that's a good thing :cuppa

Post privatisation the ratio of managers will revert to industry standards of 1:45 where as present we have a 1:10. Managers face a cull just like we did. Secondly WCM comes from 2 concepts introduced into production models in the 80s. LEAN and SIX SIGMA. These were implemented and produced huge savings for the companies involved. Those same companies exists today. ( food for thought). WCM is not going away due to its perceived financial benefits to the likes of Moya. Get use to it!
The union needs to get involved to ensure a level playing field where possible. We are 2 years behind and losing ground so we need to get started. No point standing outside looking in.

I don't know of any DO that has anything like 1:10 managers:staff. Its 1:50 in my office and probably about 1:35 on average in our area.

Ours would be about 1:25. You are simply replacing an expensive watcher for a cheaper working version. Each WCM champion becomes a team leader of about 20 people he reports to a manager and the manager then prioritizes. Each office of a moderate size would have 2 line managers and 5 or 6 WCM champions and every 3rd or 4th office would have the equivalent of a DOM . The WCM champion would also be expected to deliver thereby utilising the working day instead of shooting the breeze and drinking coffee until home time.

Where have you been?
We tried getting involved with WCM,we even have the agreements to prove it.
It was a dismal failure because at the heart of WCM is continuous improvement which as well as being theoretically impossible is basically just another word for job cuts and how stupid did the union look endorsing job cuts?

If the union gets involved with WCM the membership's perception would be that the union was actively engaged in undermining its own members job security.
What would the alternative be?...the union gets involved to actively derail WCM?
A nice idea but I don't think RM will let that fly.If you want to be a WCM poster boy go ahead pcb but don't pretend you're doing it for anyone else but yourself.
