The problem with this is we need to gain work from the competitor and not lose it. Work creates jobs and gives us more of a chance of earning a decent living wage. And this talk of not carrying it , what would you go out with. Maybe you want to go back to the old days when your delivery consisted of one bag, two at most. Problem with this is there would be no jobs and the competition will take over..

Why are the CWU bandying this boycott ballot about then? Surely they know what they can legally get away with? :hmmmm

This will not be the first time that an employer takes out a court injunction on a strike based on a technicality.

Given that the Union went straight for a strike and then now talks about work-to-rule and OT ban; it makes you wonder which one they think will be the must effective.

My thought is the work-to-rule and OT ban but they also know that it will be the most difficult to effect amongst employees.

The Union are bricking it - they will not want this to drag on. They are now using a scattergun approach after whipping up so much frenzy and not much support from postal workers.

For those that are so sure that this was an overwhelming yes, they should think again. We have to assume that almost all the NO voters actually voted no because they are happy with the deal as it is. Yes, a handful might be intimidated into not crossing the picket.

Non Union members is ditto - lets say 75/25 - why would they not be in the Union if they support the Union.

And then you have those that were quick to vote Yes before the £300 bribe - a sizeable number of Yes voters will not Strike. Some might have even voted yes out of solidarity and to given the Union a strong hand but not for a strike.

This is the Union that has had a pre-ballot approval on Privatisation, Boycott of Competitors mail and Non-Cooperation and yet they did not really believe that they could stop privatisation and they did not think that they should actually fully ballot members for a boycott of competitors mail and non-cooperation as well as an industrial strike.

The Union is dillydallying and shillyshallying - not good enough!

Are they actually going to tell us precisely in real terms and plain language what they expect from the negotiations? As it stands they can come out with anything and claim that they have been successful

We have also seen a Chief Executive that has used every trick in the book to sway a vote. A government that has hastened the commencement of Privatisation and given away a few underpriced free shares to RM staff to sway a vote, and yet we still have an overwhelming majority of Royal Mail Employees who are union members support industrial action.
The reason why Strike Action and Industrial Action short of strike action were not balloted together is because 1/ Legally there has to be a seperate ballot and 2/ The CWU first requirement was a huge majority for the ultimate sanction of strike action in order to strengthen the bargaining power.
Those who believe that CWU will unwittingly lead us into breaking the law regarding a ban on DSA mail, live in cloud cuckoo land. They have had several months since the membership gave them the green light to pursue this course of action and will no doubt have received professional legal advice on whether this is a non starter or not. Yes it is possible that they are using this to apply more pressure although knowing that it is a non starter, but is this any different than the disgraceful way Moya Greene has used the £300 lollypop to sway the minds of those members that are sitting on the fence.
If we fight for decent working conditions and pay and the company does not play ball and loses business, why should we worry because the alternative is that they will make profit at our expense and our pay and terms and conditions are whittled down to what is basically slave labour.
So all of you who continue to sleight the union and what it is trying to achieve, just look back in a few years time and ask yourself whether you were giving out the right vibes.

Your argument is still not based on fact. It is still supposition and hypothetical.

I just do not buy your argument! It is as simple as that. No amount of scaremongering is going to change the fact that there is an offer on the table which I am happy with

Dorset Plodder wrote:I think BF has explained the situation quite clearly. I believe the main aim for RM would be to make sure we get paid the full cost of delivering DSA (plus a bit of profit for us) at least we'd not be subsidising our competitors, as I believe we have been for the last couple of years. :thumbdown

The CWU may well use the boycotting of DSA as a bargaining tool, it would be popular with Union Members, but I think (for the reasons previously mentioned) it would be a bad idea in the long run if if left the CWU open to legal action or caused the loss of business and maybe jobs.
We were but aren't now. We make a profit from DSA (£80 million I think).

2 quotes by Emiliano Zapata spring to mind.

Sorry to post RM propaganda but this is relevant especially the possible impact of TNT end-to-end delivery in Manchester. That could lead to job losses and closures or mergers of some depot.

Most of the Mail Centres have already being merged and some are going - we should be careful.

* If we cost RM a lot of money then do we expect them just to quietly slink away and/or say Bravo!

This is why CWU have allowed until 4th November for an agreement to be struck. It's not like 4 years ago ... there is much more competition and some of them do offer reliable deliveries that undercut RM on some revenue streams. That is why I am hoping for an agreement as lost business will not be easy to claw back and affects all RM employees. It needs to include guarantees on T&Cs and I think this issue will prove the most difficult to agree.

Another suggestion is boycott door to door for a month.
