So i started yesterday with an 8 hour induction. Was boring and mostly pointless but 8 hours paid for sitting around is not bad. So today was my 1st day, email said turn up at 10am. They did not have a clue what my hours were and when i was working.
My contract just says 20 hours a week so i accept i will be pushed and pulled about on a weekly basis but today was a joke. Had a mini tour, then went out on a round with a nice bloke who didn't know the round that well but turned out ok and got back at 13.30 ish. The manager then said they will call when they need me, so after 3.5 hours of stuff i really already knew i was off home again. I still need to do 8.5 hours this week but will have to wait on a call to know whats going on.
Not a great start to life in Royal Mail so will see how things are after a few weeks.

Re: New postie advice
Sad! This is the sort of thing the Union should seriously monitor.
It always amazes that not a lot is put in place for new starters. Sometimes, the managers appear not to know that the new starter is coming and what to do with them. Making new starters come in so late on the first day is also annoying to the person training or child minding for the day.
20 hours - how can anyone live on those hours? Moreover, it appears that they just want you to come in when it suits them. not!
Well, they will call you when they need you does not sound good. So you could be doing 4 hours a day for 5 days or any other shift or different shifts every week - I hope I am wrong.
Anyway, welcome and good luck - keep us posted.

Yeah is a bit annoying the way it's gone so far. Have another part time job to make up the money but would have liked a semi structured week. Can't even order uniform as I don't know my managers name so got to wait till I'm back in to find that out.
