On logistics the union signed it off so we are committed to doing overtime as it is now part of our contract. Then again if your 100 miles from your home and times up I don't think you would ring in to say time up and walk home!

Just tell dom before you go out that you won't be able to finish and you want to finish on time. Simples.

Overtime has to suit the posty too! Not just the manager.

Yes you need to follow the correct procedure. Our DOM kept changing it at a whim from 'tell me before you tie down/tell me before you leave the building/phone before 1/phone before 12.30/if you take it all out and bring anything back its wilful delay'

Be prepared to be tested, tested and tested again afterwards though. And watched like a hawk. Do your job right and you have nothing to worry about.
I can second that, tested and tested accused of underpreforming, and when you are off on leave they might put one of the early start morons on who will come in 2 hours early and run around.

I haven't gone over my time at Christmas since about 2003.
Nobody can sack you just because you decided you had better things to do, IN YOUR OWN FREE TIME, other than slaving away for this crummy outfit.

Hiya guys i'm new here so be gentle...slightly related question but didn't want to start a new thread...

Only been in the job a month on a 30 hour contract and last week due to being teamed with other inexperienced staff ended up working 38 hours.

Just had payslip and only been paid for 30 hours...

Any advice on raising this with 'the management' ??

Cheers in advance

Did you claim 8 hours overtime??? If not speak to union rep. Maybe he can sort it out.

Tell them there's been a mistake with your o/t. If they've just scrapped the o.t. for some reason like "wasn't approved by management" they should have told you, instead of letting you work more unapproved hours. If this is the case get onto your rep about it and don't do a scrap of o.t. until it is paid. They could be trying it on with you being the new guy, if you're on a temp contract they may hope you'll let it slide rather than endanger your chances of getting kept on permanently. On the other hand it could just be an oversight.

Wasn't expecting to be paid overtime to be honest, just thought i'd be paid for the extra hours at normal rate.

Yeah I am on a 6 month temporary contract which I hope to be extended, provided i'm not expected to work additional hours for nothing of course !!

The difference between o.t rate and normal is pennies tbh but if you're getting paid diddly squat for your extra work it makes a world of difference. I take it the 8 hours wasn't worked all in the same day but over a few days? If that is the case mismanagement could have informed you that it was unapproved overtime after the first instance, the fact they didnt could lead one to think either a) that it was fine to continue claiming and they would pay you or b) they were seeing how much free work they could get out of you. Have a word with your rep.

Harrap wrote:our DOM blatentley stated to an employee, infront of other employees and with our union rep standing by his side, and i quote "if you are not willing to work overtime you should empty your locker and find another job" the union rep didnt react as that statement was followed by "read your contract as it states 'you will be required to do overtime occaisionally' " so be careful, the postie in question had no option but to leave!

your rep must be a shitebag

Yeah the 8 hours was spread over the 5 days I worked, will have a word with my training 'coach' in morning to see what he suggests

Thanks for your advice, just didn't want to make a tit of myself by raising it if I should have already known I wasn't gonna get paid.
