It wasn't uncommon in the past for one postie to pay another in cash to cover part or all of their delivery.
Strictly unofficial and off the books but it did happen.
It would never fly if it wasn't by agreement and certainly not if instructed by management but it is possible someone got their wires crossed somewhere in this case.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

In the past (to go to footie etc) some of our guys have paid cash to cover the delivery. This got outlawed about a year ago by the Dom. :hmmmm

Personally i would have asked for a days leave without pay or done a sickie
Rows of houses all bearing down on me........I can feel their blue hands touching me.......All these things in all positions.........All these things will one day take control..........

Sifish wrote:Hi All please could some one give me some advice,
i phoned the manager to say i was unable to attend work this morning as my wish bone on the car had snapped and had no way to get to work and needed to get the car sorted that day.

The manager arranged for me to get cover but told me i would have to pay his wages £60 for a 4 hour round ??????

The other post person has done the round and now wants payment is this my responsibility or royal mails ??

kind regards
si
Get your union guy involved. And tell your manager that it's the responsibility for RM to pay staff. Not you.

If this is true then I'm truly shocked. What a w****r of a manager.
yep its true it all happened yesterday

will look at contacting the union rep and sorting first thing in the morning
thanks all

So it's like with a flat, you can sublet a job?

If that's the case, I have a 24-hour duty (well, 24 with SA...) available for the fantastic wage of £100 cash-in-hand! per week! (Apply now! It'll be gone before you know it!)

That's an idea.
Take on 3 or 4 FT jobs and subcontract them to some eastern Europeans for £5 ph, and still get the same wage. Result.

The manager is this case is a tool, and a moron.
I have no problem with 2 posties paying for work between them, but it's their choice and that's fine.
It's not for a manager to start with this type of crap. If they had suggested it beforehand as an option and a way to save leave days or sick record etc., then again it's fine, but it does appear that a manager has made an arbitrary decision in this case, which he had no right to do, and is against procedure.
Sometimes, I wish I wasn't a Rep.

You're kidding, right ?
I've avoided this thread 'cause i believed it to be a wind-up, but that advice is totally wrong.

If this really did happen, and i'm still not convinced it did, do not part with any cash or cheque. Let the said manager sort it out.
Just agree to him taking a days pay off you or a day off your annual leave

It happens in my office on a regular basis.

I think it is an unuasual practice. But manangement allow it to happen.

So, is it a precedent? As it is ingrained?

Maybe but surely it should be a voluntary arrangement between two posties who agree a fee and not an amount thrust on one by a DOM?
If you do a job too well, you’ll get stuck with it.

Maybe not clear on this.

Am not talking about a DOM enforcing a practice ; rather that the practice of paying someone to do or complete your walk.

That is the practice that seems to be ingrained and that is , to me , a problem.

Of course I could well be wrong and this is the way to work

if i read this right the op agreed with the manager subbing it out for cash before it was delivered , if thats the case they owe a workmate £60 a deal is a deal wether the manager should do it or not it suited all parties at the time , the colleague was promised cash and thats what they should get , we still do things like this in my office and nobody ever goes back on their word ever !
