It is nonsense but it isn't completely true that you are covered to the same extent that you would be normally either..
Compulsory Employers’ Liability Insurance covers a business against liability for injury or disease to their employees arising out of their employment.

It makes no mention of start times and of course if it was limited to contractual hours nobody could do any overtime and if it relied on employer's permission all overtime would have to be pre-authorised in writing first however....any claim you make will no doubt be contested by a hungry pack of insurance company lawyers who will definitely cite the fact that you were on the premises without permission outside your normal working hours and that will go down in the "blame" column and that will very probably have a detrimental affect on any settlement you get.
