Marked as missort and taken back to the office :cuppa

Legitimate and endorsed undeliverables are returned to the office. But this is not what the thread is about - it's about stuffing items back into the system which is wilful delay and a ticking time-bomb for the person responsible.
The machine stops.

You endorse Missort and date and put it back. If you have sufficient reason and inform a manager you can put mail back into the system. However, non endorsing or an insufficient justification will mean suspension and could ultimately lead to a sacking.

There's a huge difference between the occasional missort being took back into the office and regularly putting mail back into the system.

I had a word with him today and he said he only does it when a house has only one or two items which are just advertising or something not very important. If he 'recycles' 10 calls a day, it can easily save 30 minutes. A lot of his delivery round is down tracks, opening gates, etc. He said its the only way he can get done in time these days, he said he wouldn't do it with anything remotely important looking or first class.

I agreed with his suggestion that RM should try and cut costs by asking customers to install a box at the end of their drives so he wouldn't have the long walks/drives, opening gates, etc. He even suggested RM should offer to supply a free mailbox, I have to agree that there are many ways we could save time especially on rural deliveries, but RM doesn't appear to be interested in looking into this sort of thing. They prefer to accuse people of being slow.

It's not for us to try to distinguish between "items which are just advertising or something not very important" and "anything remotely important looking or first class".
As for "asking customers to install a box at the end of their drives" this would no doubt enable more addresses to be added to his round. :Very Happy
"They prefer to accuse people of being slow" but sometimes postmen ARE too slow.

its not the postmans job to make these kind of decisions regarding taking short cuts in order to complete a duty, the protocol is to inform managers before leaving office if you feel the delivery wont be completed and then to do the delivery in proper order with mail not being able to be completed in duty time returned to the office and informing managers of what has been returned.
Wouldnt like to see someone sacked because he was trying to "help"

It's those who try and do a 'proper' job who get more trouble from the management in our office, so you can see what they really care about - SPEED not SERVICE!

silver_fox wrote:I cannot BELIEVE what I am reading!!! Do you really think they monitor mail going through the system?

In fact I once put a whole sack of packets back through the system with no comeback! This was after it was left on the wrong drop bag frame and brought out to me on delivery - I wouldn't have been paid to stay out there and do it!

I know of posties who frequently do this, the jobs are too big, customers don't even want half the mail - how many times do they tell you "more rubbish" "more stuff for the recycle bin".

The new posties are only interested in getting home early, running round, jumping gates, cutting across gardens, there is no time to do things to the book!

It's those who try and do a 'proper' job who get more trouble from the management in our office, so you can see what they really care about - SPEED not SERVICE!

If your post is genuine and not exaggerated then your office is a shithole full of cowards who would rather take the easy route than stand up to management.
Don't blame the size of the job or pretend it doesn't matter because the customer doesn't really want it and don't blame the "new" posties when you're dumb enough to admit doing it yourself.
If you don't want the job give it to someone who does. :cuppa

As far as the "do you believe they monitor mail coming through the system?"

Of course they do. Anybody doing anything like is described in the original post is literally playing Russian Roullete with their job. And the thing is, someone who does it once and doesn't get caught, as with most things, will build up a false sense of security meaning they will continue to do so, until the point comes where they are caught.

I can say that a few years back my line manager approach me and asked if i knew anything about several letters that had been placed back into the system (via pillar boxes) that should never have entered the system at that stage. PPI. Fortunately for me, although the addresses were part of my frame, that section was delivered by another duty - due to a revision where the new frames hadn't been set up properly. That was 1 day after the PPI letters were placed back in the system I believe. So not only are these things flagged, but they are flagged very quickly! As it happens, I beleive no action was taken against my colleague as they were found to be mis-sorts/ deads that he didn't endorse.

Anyway, please if you consider your colleague a friend, then you need to make him understand that he is probably already under investigation, or will be very soon.

My post is entirely genuine, and I totally agree with you, our office IS a shithole, and it IS full of cowards.

But what can you do about it? Stand up alone and then be targetted by management and thrown out for the first mistake you make? Even if you don't make a mistake, they will find something to suspend you for.

The few in our office who used to try and stand up have given up the fight, it is just not worth it. Our jobs were made bigger without our consent. While we were out on delivery, frames were changed, extra half hour was put on each job. A whole job 'disappeared.

It has been a gradual process, first of all the disappearing job was put out as absorption, they would even pay overtime to do it. Then it was added to frame, as I said above. For a little while people still turned it back, or claimed OT to complete it.

However, eventually management said it was part of your duty and willfull delay if you don't take it all. They also decided at this point no overtime would be paid.

Anyone questioning how they are supposed to do 30-40 mins extra work each day in the same amount of time faces the wrath of the manager who won't get his bonus unless all his targets are met and no overtime is listed.

Threats include being told there will be consequences, you MAY be suspended, there are no jobs out there, Royal mail is losing money, the figures don't lie, the mail is down, you should be out the office earlier, there was only so and so items of mail which equals so and so amount of time sorting, you are slow, somebody else can do it why can't you.... etc etc

So all in all, its easier to join the sheep and do what you're told, forget about doing a proper job, no chance of that now. We've invented a 'one letter rule', if a house has only one letter and it's not part of a loop IE it will add on time, then it goes back through the system! That, along with doorstepping, ignoring recordeds, bringing back mail where gates are shut, it's the way forward guys.....

The Gazette recently reported that two members of staff had been sacked from the office, allegedly for failing to obtain the signatures of customers they were making Recorded Deliveries to.
