Re: Seniorority question
If some posters(usually senior and/or FT) think that resourcing the business using overtime costs jobs whose jobs are they worried about?chrisj wrote:The funny thing is that, some posters here (usually senior and/or FT) thinks the people (usually PT) that do OT are scummy and taking jobs away..
I'll give you a clue...it's not likely to be the (usually senior and/or FT) job is it?
My job is secure-ish.
My hours are secure-ish.
A fixed-term part-timer and any hours he/she can grab isn't...secure-ish.
I don't think anyone is scummy for doing OT if they need to.
I just wish they didn't have to and unfortunately it's a vicious circle because the more work that gets done on OT the less chance we have of moving part-timers up to full-time hours and substantiating their contracts.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

next you will be saying your rep is always in the office having cut-back chats and making more savings.
roll on unoffical walk-outs its just around the corner.
Yes is still does go on mate....just to prove it he had a whole walk to himself today on OT(one of his mates was off..friends and family club)..the walk never got offered to anyone else(he usually goes round with the ot book)...and he was also on the best duty in the office too..yep the friends and family clubs still is strong in our office at least!

Re: Seniority question
I've been a union member for years ( NUM to be precise) and no matter how long you had been down the pits you were all treated the same. I can't believe some of the rubbish I've read on here from so called union men! I've been in the cwu at Parcelforce about six years and can assure you there is no one except management senior to me. We've got this ' seniority' twaddle going on at the moment, most of the lads don't agree with it only the more senile ones. Sorry meant to say ' senior ones'! We had a union meeting a few weeks ago where we all voted and it was decided holidays would be chosen on rolling seniority so over a few years everyone gets a fair go. The union rep said he would put it to the manager for us. Guess what? I just found out He never went! Guess what else? He is the longest server in the depot! Guess what else? He wont knows hit him when i confront with this next week! It's one thing getting screwed over by a boss but another thing to get screwed over by your union rep. And for someone to say everyone gets their holiday choice with seniority, how can they? Kids August holidays last 6 weeks, the 3 lots of 2 weeks. How can, say, the 5th in a group of 9 have a summer holiday with his kids when the first 3 in the group get them every year?

Re: Seniority question
Even the CWU in the Way Forward Agreement are quite specific about it.
RM Pay Directive 8/2000 http://www.cwu-e4.co.uk/WF_Seniority.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
RM Pay Directive 8/2000 http://www.cwu-e4.co.uk/WF_Seniority.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Note also that seniority will not be used for leave selection (except possibly to allocate employees
into rotating groups) once local leave selection processes have been reviewed. This will be
necessary to conform with the criteria set out in the agreement on Annual Leave: “all
employees will be included on an equal basis”.

Thanks for that. I've done a bit of research about this, it's doing my head in that the union are so archaic about seniority. If all new starters at royal mail didn't join the union and pay their fees, these old dinosaurs would soon be without a union to preside over!
