how much petrol did he put in ? i myself once put two quids worth of unleaded in a van and it was ok to drive aparantly its worse the other way round diesel in a petrol
Petrol in a diesel van can destroy the engine.
Diesel is a lubricant fuel, petrol is a solvent fuel.
Running a diesel pump with no lubrication means a knackered pump and loads of tiny little metal fragments swimming about in your fuel which can do so much damage to your engine that it's cheaper to replace the whole thing.

But no problem with used fat from your local chip shop in a diesel engine.

Fishtank is right .A modern diesel engine is not able to run anything but diesel due to the very high pressured fuel system and the risk of the pump failing. Vege oil is too thick and can only be used in older much slower diesels.

Without being there and dealing with the situation nobody on here could comment with 100% certainty, many people in my office have done the same and are still there (and still driving) but maybe there needs to be a budget cut, maybe your friend is a trouble maker, maybe he's not very good and those reasons could mean a dismissal........but then I don't know.

I've never heard of anyone being conducted for mistakenly putting the wrong fuel in a vehicle, the only possible charge would be damage to Royal Mail property but that has to be either reckless or malicious and this is neither.
I would be very surprised if any charges were brought,i would be shocked and disappointed in your reps if they were able to make anything stick....but nothing is guaranteed.
theoreticaly,,,, if he was to become sick, say with work related stress,,, and was unable to return to work until after his discipline period was over,,,,,, could they backdate any punishment to when his probationary period was in operation. or could they extend his probationary period by the lenght of time he was unfit to work??

No..that would just give him more to worry about with the attendance procedure.
As it stands he has done nothing wrong, lets not make it easier for them.
