what i am saying is a manager can do what they want as long as it is a reasonable request

what may be reasonable to a manager, may not be reasonable to an employee

that is why we have reps and the grievance procedure

Nail on the head mate. Personally I'm not that keen on working 6 days a week if I can help it (I do have other things in my life, shock horror!). But when the management bug me enough to do my day off I do sometimes agree to help them, but on the premise that I can do my own duty so I'm not gona take even longer than usual fiddling about with a round I don't know.

I do feel sorry for the cover, but in reality I don't particularly want to do the day off, I just get bugged enough to do it until I cave in!

The manager is not the problem here he/she wants an easy life.
The problem is the low life scumbag coming in demanding this and that.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The low life scumbag is keeping your office clear from work so when you get back early you don't have to take more out or he himself coming back after his day of to two days mail so like it or not duty holder should and has got full priority to his own delivery on his day off tough

So you're saying there IS a use for a low life scumbag?
Did you ever apply for the new role in the business btw?

Disagree entirely with this frankly selfish view.

Yes as a 1 duty holder you signed for a duty but as your contract is usually 5 over 6 days then on the 6th day it's not your duty, its your day off covers duty.

You both have the same right to be treated fairly and bumping that day's duty holder without consulting him is unfair, selfish and a sure sign of someone who does not understand solidarity. If you were moved from your duty for "operational" reasons you would quite rightly be angry about it, so put yourself in the day off covers place - they signed for a duty that includes yours.

Never mind whether its fair or not, or even if there is an official Union position on this - its common decency and good manners to take account the effect of your actions on others, "Do unto others what you want them to do to you" - I hope you don't complain too loudly when they ask you to do something outside your own duty -

For 10 years as a floater I got moved around so the duty holders could come in and do there own rounds on overtime, now I am the duty holder, so it's my turn to to say "only if I am doing my own duty", after that it's up to the manager to let me know if he still wants me in or not, may not be fair to the cover, but thats life.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the number one problem with RM staff and society in general. I'm. Allright. Jack.
Made even worse by the fact that the person has already suffered the same issue themselves. What are we now? A boarding school from the last century? "When I first started I was made to lick up the older boy's c**p and take it from behind, so know I'm the older boy I'm going to jolly well do the same thing to them."
Quite frankly, anyone with this attitude should be forced to leave the union.
