The law does not allow you to take that position though DV and we do normally like to make a big fuss about employers working within the framework of employment legislation so i don't really know why we would choose to ignore this particular part.dvbuk55 wrote:Well I'd deal with it simply.....................no FF under any circumstances...............family circumstances are the responsibility of the individual not the company that employs them.

Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
Well lets just say the law is an ass. If you worked for a plumber, builder or any small company really and you said to the gaffer whilst working on a job " yeah I'll have to be home by 3 to pick the kids up".................his reply would have to be expurgated. I find it objectionable that those who do not either by choice or circumstance have a family are discriminated against because of it.fishtank wrote:The law does not allow you to take that position though DV and we do normally like to make a big fuss about employers working within the framework of employment legislation so i don't really know why we would choose to ignore this particular part.dvbuk55 wrote:Well I'd deal with it simply.....................no FF under any circumstances...............family circumstances are the responsibility of the individual not the company that employs them.

Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
I don't actually have a problem with FF.
for many who malign it now, they covered their childcare under ye olde RM and getting home early.
I don't need it as we have it worked out(though often means military precision and passing like ships in the night!)
My issue is those who go for FF and don't really need it.
As i posted before, such as those on FF but always do docket.

Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
Just curious,in what way would a FF duty be different to a normal one,is it the start/finish times school run thing?
Or is there much more to it?
Or is there much more to it?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
We're going through our revision process now and the dom has decided to not make a drastic alteration of the start times for fear of being inundated with FF requests!POSTMAN wrote:To be fair what is 45 minutes, wouldn't it of been easier just to keep the same finishing times.Hawkey99 wrote:The finish times in our office are going from 14:15 to 15:00.
If someone says they collect their child / children from school would this be enough criteria to be given a family friendly duty.
We seem to have over a quarter of the office that our DOM has given family friendly duties.
Bizarre ???
There is always a way to sort things if those involved in the revision worked a bit harder on it,maybe nick 15 mins or so.
Any married man should forget his mistakes. There's no use in two people remembering the same thing.

I'm not quite sure of your definition of discrimination DV.dvbuk55 wrote:I find it objectionable that those who do not either by choice or circumstance have a family are discriminated against because of it.
I can't think of any reason why my terms and conditions would be any poorer because a colleague was on a Flexible Working Pattern.
If you mean they get to start earlier than me and finish earlier that is not discrimination,it's a different work pattern....like the nightshift....like the callers....like the business duties.
If you mean they bypassed seniority to get those duties...well i wouldn't personally mention seniority and discrimination in the same sentence...that's a can of worms you don't want to open.
The only problems with Family Friendly is mismanagement and employee abuse and that's really just the one problem....management.

Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
And there's the rub ft, the management of the system and the abuse of it. There is insufficient control of the reasons for FF, whether there are alternative arrangements available for example. Duties should not be ringfenced as they are but tailored to the specific needs of a specific individual if indeed there is a legal aspect required. As has been stated on here people are abusing the system and profiting from it. There would be no question of jumping the queue if the FF policy did not exist or was far more closely monitored than it is.fishtank wrote:I'm not quite sure of your definition of discrimination DV.dvbuk55 wrote:I find it objectionable that those who do not either by choice or circumstance have a family are discriminated against because of it.

And that better work/life balance should only apply to those who have taken it upon themselves to breed a family. The single folks can take up the remaining slack because they are single. If the FF duty means no IPS or no frame filling, great, just give that bit to the singles. A managable round ? yeah FF, leave the monstrosities to the singles. No, what you are requesting is preferential treatment due to your lifestyle choice. Maybe I want pisshead friendly hours, tough. Here are somethings you "get" already: Free healthcare, free education, tax credits, family allowance, favourable tax code, bank bailouts and ultra low interest rates to help you afford your mortgage and keep your houseprice high. Heres what the single folks get: the bill.REDLETTER wrote:Very true, but you can still ask! Just a thought, hows about you pay over the family allowance to somebody to pick up the kids or something.
Rant rant rant.

If that's going on in your office it's nothing to do with Family Friendly..it's because your office is full of mugs.AdTheBad wrote:

The only difference with Family Friendly in my office is the start/finish times.
Same IPS/Same crappy rounds just start earlier and finish earlier...no slack being taken up by anyone else.
The rest of your post makes even less sense.
Do you have a rep?

Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
I had the worse and longest walk because the "senior" staff had the easiest walks, none of the part time did IPS, only when the full time sandwich eating, coffee drinking throw a strop that anyone else copped the IPS. And then they were bagged up, had time for their breaks whilst the part time were still prepping their walks!A managable round ? yeah FF, leave the monstrosities to the singles.
If you were in the pocket of either the DOM, Lino or DOM Assistance, you had it easy. I did my job for the hours I got paid, and never brown-nosed anyone. And I didn't like Bullies!
Everyone get these benefits, whether you have a family or not, unless you don't pay your tax?you "get" already: Free healthcare, free education, tax credits, family allowance, favourable tax code, bank bailouts and ultra low interest rates to help you afford your mortgage and keep your houseprice high. Re: Advice Please Repick and Family friendly Duties
@Hawkey99,
"Parents of children aged 16 or under, or disabled children under the age of eighteen (Parental Leave), have the right to apply to their employer to work more flexibly if they have:
-worked for their employer for 26 weeks continuously at the date that the application is made
-not have made another application to work flexibly under the right during the past 12 months
The request can cover hours of work, times of work and place of work and may include requests for different patterns of work.
The request must be in writing to the employer and will need to state the employee's relationship to the child / carer, and give a proposed start date. It will also need to state if a previous application has been made and what date it was made, and the application must set out what effect the flexible working pattern will have on the employers business.
The employer has a statutory duty to consider the request seriously, and to refuse it only if there are clear business grounds for doing so. When holding a meeting to consider the application employees have the right to be accompanied at the meeting by a fellow employee or certified trade union representative."
