Re: Van driving query
Karchun, you really shouldn't be using your car for work without business insurance. Unfortunately, RM management aren't very good at telling employees this. Or that they should be getting bags dropped and yourself dropped off at your first point of delivery. I know it's normally easier to use your car, I did it, but carried my business insurance on from a previous job. But think of the money you're saving RM. Not to mention the wear on your car etc.
I know it can be hard to approach management about this. An easy way is to ask for a quiet word, tell him you've asked your insurance company for advice, and they refuse to insure you for business purposes without it costing too much. Tell your manager you can't afford this. RM's blanket insurance only covers you 3rd party as others have said.
How many new starters don't realise they shouldn't use their cars? How many times do managers not inform them that they are not fully insured? I certainly wouldn't have realised the hoohaa it causes if I hadn't read these forums. And I did have adequate insurance. RM should be more open about this IMO.

YES you have to have the correct insurance. You don't need business insurance- you need occasional business use cover - courier.karchun wrote:Btw its a sheCheetah wrote:My only advice is stop using your car. If the manager makes a fuss tell him you cannot afford business insurance, if he says you are insured under RMs blanket tell him you want to be insured comprehensive not 3rd party only......
And do i have to make my insurance a business insurance cause i only work part time - 1 day only!
If you don't have even occasional business use cover the POLICE can stop you and seize your CAR as if you have mail on board. Its as simple and as scary as that.
Read this LTB for full and frank advice http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... te#p367921" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which includes this gem
The CWU/HQ Health, Safety & Environment Department has been made aware of 4 separate cases of Postmen who have in recent times been stopped by the Police whilst using their private car on delivery and had subsequently been prosecuted and had their car seized and impounded whilst out on their delivery round. They all received 6 penalty points on their Drivers License, a £200 Fixed Penalty Fine for No Commercial/Business Use Insurance, a £105 Recovery/Tow Away Fee plus £15 per day secure storage charges.

It is important to understand that if your business unit has had a delivery methods revision Royal Mail's position is that PCOD has ceased in that unit and the Insurance Bond is no longer applicable.

People are being told that the RM insurance doesn't run out until later this year so it's still OK to use cars on delivery post P&L.fishtank wrote:It is important to understand that if your business unit has had a delivery methods revision Royal Mail's position is that PCOD has ceased in that unit and the Insurance Bond is no longer applicable.

Well it doesn't take much to blow that theory out the water.Hitcher wrote:People are being told that the RM insurance doesn't run out until later this year so it's still OK to use cars on delivery post P&L.fishtank wrote:It is important to understand that if your business unit has had a delivery methods revision Royal Mail's position is that PCOD has ceased in that unit and the Insurance Bond is no longer applicable.
If you don't have permission you don't have insurance and Delivery Office Managers cannot override a decision made at senior level....so you don't have permission.
All delivery revisions will be planned on the basis of no use of private cars. Private cars on delivery will cease upon the deployment of a Delivery Methods revision in a unit.

And do i have to make my insurance a business insurance cause i only work part time - 1 day only! (Because i am so young, my insurance costs £2k already and this insurance company is gps tagged from 11pm to 5am - im not sure whether they'll even let me insure business??
If you want to be insured comprehensive then i'm quite sure you will have to pay the premium for business use as i'm sure RM's blanket cover is third party only i.e not even covered by them for fire and theft. You know how these insurance companies are these days if they can get out of any claim they will......

, but change your description as you've registered as a male.

LOL!!! xD
Anyway thanks for the advice - i'll go try and see if business insurance is feasible soon, if not i guess i'll just tell my manager and ask her to add me to RM blanket insurance (am i correct??), if not ask if i could drive their vans - if all else fails either let them drop me off or i quit :/

Re: Van driving query
royal mails third party cover is only for the protection of the mail. its incase the car catches fire etc.
it does not cover you to transport mail.
as stated, you need business or hire and reward insurance
some insurance companies charge about an extra £70 but it realy is pot luck
for royal mail to cover you then your registration would need to go onto the MIB DATA BASE.
it does not

Re: Van driving query
to get yourself covered, this needs to be done
1/ contact your insurance company and tell them you need business cover to transport mail to your delivery points and that you are a postman. it is important you check what the premium will be. might be £70, might be £1000 depending on your insurance company
2/ take your new insurance policy document to your line manager with your v5 reg doc, driving licence and MOT document.
3/ the manager will photo copy these docs and return them.
4/ the manager will then inspect your vehicle to see if it is in a fit state
you will then be covered on a third party basis.
you will need to do this every six months
if you drive a royal mail vehicle then you will/should be given the royal mail hand book.
you will also have to fill out an online driver assessmant program. it is multiple choice and takes 2 hours approx.
you can save and return later. when i take people through it i do it in 30 minute blocks
