Who says the ballot is in danger of timing out???

All we have to do is take action within a reasonable timeframe!! Courts have previously ruled this as 2-3 months. The only time limit is we have to take action within 28 days of ballot result which we obviously did!!

Lovejoy, my understanding of the situation is that once action has started, if more than 28 days elapse (because negotiations are underway, for example) with no I/A, a further ballot is required. I'm sure that was the reason behind giving 4th September as the target date to conclude negotiations. Why else would our side want to pick a Tuesday as a date by which agreement must be reached ? Normally with this kind of process, wouldn't both sides pick the end of a particular week as a target date to try to reach an agreement by, unless there was of course some tactical advantage to be gained from a mid-week date ? Don't forget, RM weren't even going to talk to us. Then the rolling strikes hit them hard and they sought talks with the CWU. Put it this way, if I was on the CWU negotiating team, I'd be telling RM the date by which the talks should be concluded !

Anyhow, I might be wrong, but there was a hell of a lot of work at my office again today. We had over 700 cages of inward work when I went in this morning, and none of the outward work got touched. It looks like deliveries may be getting some heavy days in terms of volumes of mail, at least in our catchment area. I don't know if the same thing is happening nationally, but big volumes of mail will be helpful if we do have to re-start the rolling strikes again. If you're on deliveries in any of the postcode areas listed below, watch out, because we haven't had the levels of mail seen today in months, and it's heading your way:

I still think it is imperative that if we get shafted, and these talks have been just a stalling tactic by RM, we need to hit the ground running immediately the talks break-up, and set new strike dates whilst mail volumes are much higher, for maximum effect

me too. the mail will continue to rise right till xmas now so at least we have that advantage!

I must admit I used to be one who never really understood what being a member of a union was really about, but Leighton's patronising video did more to make me 'militant' than any amount of persuasion from my local rep. I'm so well known for my pro-strike stance now, that people have asked me to stand as a rep !!!
I promise you this, if I ever held any position of influence in the union, then strategy, tactics and a knack of constantly putting the enemy on the back-foot would be my aim. I blame years of playing chess as a youngster for any talent I may have for second-guessing the opponent's moves and hitting them with what they least expect
