Was told on starting that that accidents can be a bit iffy if you're not wearing a hi-vis and RM shoes on delivery. Only seems to be me and the more recent starters that do wear them in our section.

They say that but how many pt / new starters actually have RM boots to wear?!

Only have to wear it in the yard. That is what we were told.

How many posties don't go into the yard?
So we should all be issued with one, if only to go from the DO door to the van (or the BMW).
Why is it obligatory for drivers? What do they do that is so different to a walking postie?

We have to wear it at all times, conduct code if caught without, we managed to persuade the knobhead that we didn't need it indoors ffs he'd have us wearing it whilst sat on the bog!!

neither of the offices i worked at enforced any rule re. wearing hi-vis at any time...
the van drivers were supposed to... but only 1 of the dedicated duty drivers actually did

i tried wearing my hi-vis on a couple of occasions... and frankly there is no way that i would choose to continue to wear it in the summer...
in the winter, dark mornings etc it just boiled me alive.

that said, i always kept a hi-vis vest folded up in the small pocket in my pouch... it meant i had the back up if weather changed, or if something happened...

no idea how it is with the newer vests... but the old ones 2007 onwards were terrible ...
largely i think its down to that thing where certain colours dont reflect the heat... and red polo shirts + orange Hi-Vis vest are too dark to reflect any heat...

Is there a thing on the ERICA thing regarding this,don't think i've ever used ERICA but the old AOD reporting thing had a question about RM footware.
And AOD without the proper PPE then RM have you by the bollox.

I'm sure there is something on here where it says it's a conduct code issue if it's not worn.

best thing we have to wear now high-vis jackets and tops if i have a row with another
driver i just talk in eastern european they soon clear off.
the only problem i have with them is no one opens the door as they think your the old bill.

We have P&L and don't have to wear the Hi Viz at all, we've never been asked to and never been given one.

A couple of years back we were told that all drivers had to wear them.
For a few months they cracked down on it but then like most things RM it was forgotten about.

The new red fleece has reflective piping..as does the rain jacket and obviously the stormproof doesn't need any help.
That only leaves the time when you don't have a jacket on at all.
To be honest i'm with postman on this...if you have an AOD make sure you're fully compliant with PPE,even if you have to crawl back to the van to get it.

The piping or bands on the PPE serves a purpose in low lighting and/or poor weather however during standard lighting/weather, the fluorescent material used for the garment itself is proven to be effective.

A vehicle in normal daylight without headlights is alerted to your existence far earlier if adorned in fluorescent material, the retro-reflective banding however will serve little purpose under these conditions.

In the yard i actually agree with. I think pedestrians in a confined space with multiple RM drivers need all the extra H&S help they can get! But theres no way It should be worn at 30* heat in the middle of the day. As someone said earlier if a driver cant spot you in a bright red t shirt with a bright red bag on then your screwed anyway. I tend to wear dark clothes in my spare time and i manage to navigate roads fine without a hi vis jacket and without getting run over.

Ask them to show you the national agreement that says you have to wear them on delivery. I don't believe there is one. It is the same as cycle helmets, these need to be worn on delivery only - if you ride the bike to and from home you don't have to. Your choice of course but remember the DIMs make up the rules as they go along and most of the time they get it wrong whilst threatening you with the conduct code.

We have i'm sure a report on here somewhere where a guy was either sacked/disciplined for not wearing the helmet when either coming into work or going home.
