from all the responses i can only assume we are all in favour of abusing a disability act, and thanks to everyone who has pointed out my spelling. Is dyslexia covered by DDA? if it is i might go for permanant nights. I do know its not my place to say as i dont know the ins and out of each in dividual case but why do we live in a counrty that is so politicly correct that we cannnot challenge an abuse of the system. Do you all say the same about the abuse that goes on in our benefits system that you pay your hard eared taxes for? Ill bet you dont.

No one , well apart from one person but I think that was a joke, said that they agreed with people abusing the system. What they where saying was that diabetes was covered by the act, and that without a medical degree and an intimate knowledge of the persons concerned we are not in place to say whether they were abusing the system. You yourself admit you don't know the ins and out of each case so how do you KNOW they are abusing, or do you just think they are.

Also Dyslexia would be covered by the act as long as it's a chronic condition that affects your daily life not just work. Although you would have to convince RM and ATOS that the condition would be better managed by working nights - good luck.

I know i just wanted to have a rant and i appologise, i just get frustrated at the way things are run sometimes. i have spoke to one of them about it before and it didnt settle my feelings just made them worse (if you know wot i mean). I think were best off leaving this topic now thanks for everyones input.

The DDA means their if their quality of life is effected. However their "normal" duty is to be adjusted NOT "ring fenced" or "given a duty". Other wise during a re-pick you would have to have a seperate "DDA list of duties".

No there duty's arent ring fenced they are just treated like a leave reserve and swapped into nights ADHOC.

as a walkholder for over 30 years and a type 2 diabetic i take exeption to the remarks of this postperson,i just hope in the future that neither he or any of his family suffer from this illness.

sorry if i caused any offence. I was refering to the 2 individuals i know, not making a general rule about diabetics. Have you got a DDA in place? and would you use your disabilaty to gain an advantage over other people at work? This is partly why this angers me because i know there are some people who genuinly need help but unscrupulus people take advantage of something good to line there own pockets. On another note a have a daughter who has glycogen storage disease type 3 which is kind of opposite to diabetes where her body doesnt store glycogen properly which is genetic so i have some experience of blood sugar disorders. Again no offence was intended to any diabetic and im sorry if any was caused.

Really needs a bit of thought here guys.
Diabetes is diabetes - full stop.
Type one and type 2 both have serious long term health consequences.
Type 2 is not always down to an individual's lifestyle. Hereditary factors as well as others must be taken into account.
It is accurate however to state that lifestyle / exercise / sensible eating / weight control etc can help prevent the onset of type 2 - but thats all.
Prevention - certainly better than cure.
Also bear in mind that in a lot of cases type 2 will develop to insulin dependant and therefore mirror type 1.
Either way its something ( I'm sure ) that no-one wants.
It is a very disabilitating illness at times. Some cope much better than others.
Bear in mind as well that type 2 peeps suffer from depression twice as much as the "ordinary" man on the street ( or postie )
Infections are yet another issue as diabetics in general struggle to fight off illnesses and infections.

So - before you start levelling claims in anyones' direction - think first - and failing that - google it!

I know all this mega and i am in total agreement with you and everyone who states this, but does any sort of diabetes mean you have to knock every time you are put on a day shift or afternoon shift but doesnt stop you going to play golf straight off night shift then going to the boozer meaning staying up for 24 to 36 hours every weekend or knocking the week between christmas and new year every year? these are the abuses that really annoy me. Let me re state i am not having a go at anybody or discriminating against anyone with a diability.

I think what MMM is saying here is,if you have diabetes is it better for you to work nights?
And what would make a doctor recommend this?
