It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

if i was in that boat i would have just said "feel free to pitch in or wait longer!"

Just a few questions guys.
Are full timers paid to sort? Yes or No.
Are part timers paid to sort? Yes or No.
Why should anyone do work they are not paid to do. Full time duties have this time built into them, that's why they are FULL TIME.
How would you feel if every part timer did part of your job? How long would you remain FULL TIME if there was no work for you to do?
You criticize part timers for working over their hours, for starting early, for not doing your jobs for you! Get real! You'd soon be complaining if you were reduced to part time because part timers were performing jobs not in their duties, but it's ok for you to call them lazy because they have to wait on you sorting the missorts? Finally, with attitudes like yours, why should anyone feel the need to help you?
Well done RM/CWU you have managed to divide us at last. Pretty easy, wasn't it.

pinstripe you are missing the point,if i was ready to leave the office before my scheduled departure time and was asked to go help out a part-timer it would not be part of my duty....but could i refuse to do it?...think about it.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

What about when someone either f/t or p/t is driving home an hour or two before their scheduled finish time, passing one of their colleagues struggling to complete their delivery in time. Do they stop and help out?

WHY ?. Are we in RM (delivery especially) so obsessed with our colleagues workloads and how they perform.
Have the majority of us got the "little Hitler Dom gene" inside us.
Just go to work do your job and don't worry & bitch about what someone else is doing
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.

I think the question is why are the duties so unbalanced,i mean how many revisions have we had over the last few years ffs.

I tend to agree. When I get to work, I do my bit and forget about everyone else. Yes, we have a chat, but I'm not concerned about their performance. I do what I'm expected to do within reason. I try and chuck missorts into the right pigeon hole but I don't know that many walks so sometimes I don't. That's the full extent of my helpfulness. I will also try and take redirections and what-not directly to the designated walk holder where I know which walk they go to.

Rarely in my office is one full timer sorting while others are stood around looking at their watches. The Lino's make damn sure that anyone stood around kicking their heels "jumps on the missorts". 95% of the time the people who jump on to help are other full timers, mainly because the part timers would take 5 times as long to do the same task. Most full time staff know which walk each road is on, part timers generally don't. Part timers don't get asked/linger in the background because they would be more hinderance than help. It might work in a small office with 15-20 walks, but in an office like mine with over 100 walks there's not enough time in the part timer's contracted hours for them to "learn the frames".

That's what OPALS are for - they don't have to be fast but it would certainly help and familiarity breeds speed.

Someone posted something about where does it say a PT must do this or that - well one thing is for sure it certainly doesn't say sit on your arsch and watch somebody else working.
